Most of the summer I hardly touched driver as long irons were running miles. More about missing the pot bunkers and rough at mine, can't get away with bombing it everywhere so on the fairway the name if the game.

Maximum of 7 times for me, but that can drop to 6 without too much concern.

With standard wind direction.

Par 3's - 17deg hybrid, 24deg hybrid, 17deg hybrid, 8i. Stupid long par 3's
Par 4's - Driver, 17deg hybrid, 17deg hybrid, 24 deg hybrid, 24hybrid, Driver, 3w, Driver, Driver, 24 hybrid, Driver, 3w.
Par 5's - Driver, 3w

With an East wind, the course and clubbing changes vastly!! Very few drivers when the winds coming from the east.

When I was at Spalding this is what I would hit with a medal card in hand from the tee box.

1st par 4 (423) 3W
2nd par 4 (362) 2i
3rd par 5 (493) Driver
4th par 4 (423) Driver
5th par 4 (342) 2i
6th par 3 (202) 4i
7th par 4 (395) 3w
8th par 5 (540) Driver
9th par 3 (155) 9i
10th par 4 (369) 2i
11th par 4 (314) 5i
12th par 4 (348) 2i
13th par 5 (483) Driver
14th par 4 (350) 2i
15th par 4 (384) 3w
16th par 3 (186) 6i
17th par 4 (392) 3w
18th par 4 (360) 2i

so on a normal day with a medal card in hand (which makes a big difference) I would hit 4 drivers, but I would use my 2i 6 times.

Probably lining myself up for a barrage of abuse now, but when I was at Spalding I always found it curious that high handicappers would hit driver more than the low handicappers. A lot of the time this was bringing the trouble into play and a slight miss-hit was costing them doubles and triples, why do they feel the need to get as close as physically possible from every tee box.

The 5th was always the best example. 342 yards, bunker @ 230 & 250 on the left, miss right your blocked by trees. Big bunker at front of green so no running a low one onto it. @ 260 on the right big drop off under the trees so go in there and your looking at making a 5/6. Lower handicappers normally hit it up to the first bunker, then knock a wedge on. Higher handicappers would take out the driver trying to get it all the way down there, put it in the bunkers or miss right and have no shot to the green.

This is what I was trying to impress onto Fragger at lunchtime today. Our 6th is a par 4 of just 320 yards. Fragger can get 230 on a good hit from his driver. Trouble is if he hits it left or right he's in trouble and there's a bunker at 230.
If he hit a 200 yard shot he would still have a shortish iron to the green and take almost all the hazards out of play.
Not sure he will...
At my last club there was a tricky par 5 with a 150 yard carry over rubbish to a fairway with a pond at driving distance. OB all the way up the right and the wind blows left to right. So many people took driver and either sliced it OB, made the pond or didn't make the carry.
I just used to hit a rescue or 5 iron, make the fairway but short of the pond and play it from there.
Simple and obvious and when I eventually got some members taking rescues or 5 woods to make the carry thy all started scoring better.

Just because its a par 5 doesn't mean you have to get the big dog out!
