Have my first game in ages today at Heswall G.C

Went the range to 'brush the cobwebs off' last night. I thinned almost everything.

No matter what I tried I couldn't hit a decent shot. Only saving grace was, my driving was better than expected.

I think because my tempo and turn was poor, I was un hinging the hands way to early and had lots of parallell movement with the hips.

This, was not a good break!!!

I find that making half practice swings with the focus on keeping my turn synchronised and making sure I take a divot works.
Dont do this on a grass tee though - might not be too popular with the green keeper!

Good luck and enjoy!

Its a good job I was at the far end of the range last night because when frustration got the better of me, i took a 12' divot with my 9 iron.

If I've told you once I've told you a million times, dont exaggerate    ;)

Good luck, nice course.

I've got unfinished business with Heswall, only played it once and was basing all my irons on to the front of the green, but 150's were to the centre. I must have went through the back of 8 greens before I realised it.

I was on about the 16th, when it clicked - stupid boy.

I expected a more linksy course, but its more like a parkland by the sea, apart from the very bottom holes.

Well, what a fantastic place.

I have walked Heswall many times. Its one of my favourite places to take the pooch.Along the Wirral way you walk along the 5th(?) which is a par 5.

Its a great setting, some lovely holes. Greens where fantatsic. As good as and as fast as any I have played. The only greens that were better, were Walton Heath.. but not by much more!

Even though following on from my range session the day before I *cough*topped*cough my first *cough*3*cough* shots. Yes 3 and had a mediocre game, I still shot a 86.

After 5 months off, no swing, no idea of the course, I was happy with that. Short game was the saving grace, and a hot putter!

Good to see you're back at it Tony. I was close to joining Heswall, but a couple of things not worth mentioning put me off. The course was heavily altered a couple of years ago and they've lost a few members as a result. Can't remember which hole it is, but the long par 5 that goes straight along the shore was apparently the most contentious, a lot of the older members really struggles with it when the wind was against. They've gone from 1 - 2 year waiting list with proposer and seconder, to show us the money and your in. Still a lovely course in my opinion, and a really nice clubhouse.

After a brief flirtation with Hoylake, I'm now at Caldy, so you're welcome there for a game if you ever fancy it

Colin thats very kind of you. That long par 5, I was lucky. I managed to find my draw and beat the water. layed up and hit the green for 3 with a good 2 putt for par.

The chaps I played with both explained how they struggled in the Wind. But I liked it. Its a classic risk reward hole with plenty of ways to play it.

Thanks for the offer of Caldy. I'll certainly keep you in mind.

As for the membership. The guys I played with are both very respectful and they still had to go through the proposing and seconding plus interviews. And they still have a 3 grand joining fee.

They have had a member donate £125 grand so they are having the practice green, area re-done to USGA standards think.
