Think I had my weirdest ever round today.

Played for the first time since January in a fourball with some friends at Carrick Knowe in Edinburgh before scooting off to work nightshift and I've only now realised how close I was to a personal record. It's beginning to weird me out.

Bright but breezy day and we set off at the first from Winter tees on a fairly shortened par 70. With a bit of ring rust I hit a high hook from the first tee but I'm fairly confident it's safe, just into the light rough. We wander up to find it but to no avail...so I pop a practice ball down where I thought the ball landed, hit an easy wedge on to the green, take my 2 putts and leave my partner to lose the hole properly. Not a great start with a blob.. but hey.

Couple of safe pars after that. Then a 4 at a shortened par 5, followed by a lovely 2 at a par 3. Couple of birdies. Nice, I thought.

6 more pars then another 4 at another shortened par 5. Couple more pars after that. We're now at the 17th which is normally a par 4 at 242 yards but it's playing 176 today. I took a 4 which I considered to be a bogey at the time, my first of the day and was a bit gutted but I raked in a putt from off the green to birdie the 18th.

So, with all those shortened par 5s and all I get in the car thinking I would have shot a 71 had I taken a double bogey 6 at the first. But looking through my card it's;- blob,4,3,4,4,4,2,4,4,4,4,4,3,4,3,4,4,3. Four birdies. 2 more than I thought.

That blob cost me a 4 under 66! And it was the first shot of the day. Aaaarrrrggghhhhhh.

Still, no 5 's on the card...and "officially" no bogies. A first at least.

You would have thought we'd win the match easily but it went to the 17th as my pal on the opposing team, off 24, shot an 82 with new irons. Net 58. Not good enough ;-)

Had to share. Great game. If only.

:D

Good Shooting John ! Strange how you can either play absolute rubbish or brilliant after a lay off. There does'nt seem to be any middle ground. Bet you can't wait for your next game now.

You're right Tommo. Speaking from the experience of being the handicap convenor at my club, with a card like that even off winter tees, J-F would be on my radar. And I've now decided to change my signature avatar as a result!!

Steady lads. I'm usually hero to zero in 5 seconds. In my last round, at Craigielaw in January, I didn't even threaten 90 and walked off the 18th green a wedge less than I started. Bloomin' fragile these steel shafts.
:(

Main difference yesterday, every chip got to within 6 feet or better, which around such a short course meant more short birdie putts than I can remember. Chipping cack-handed may make me look like a duffer but it seems to work for me at least. Ooh, that electric right hand! Down boy, down.

It was certainly a nice day for it yesterday. I sat looking out the window moaning about the conditions outside and how they were ideal for golf.

Even off the front tees that's good shooting round there John.

Now you've got two and a half weeks left of your winter ticket, which course you burning up next ?

Have got the complimentary guest voucher for Braids 1, Dave, so will have to use that one up in a wee fourball. Otherwise it'll be "Royal" Craigentinny until further notice. It's just so damned handy and imo a much better track than Carrick Knowe. Is Silverknowes back to the full course, d'you know?

Was still a cracking deal at £99 for 5 months in spite of losing 2 months to the snow.

I've always said that 'I should play less,...more often " :D

Seems to banish all of your 'expectations' in my experience, and just let you play.......

good scoring, lets hope my winter lay off results in same

Steady lads.

Naw, we wullnae. We’ve had a wee secret meeting and you’re now down to 6 Mr J-F banditcoot. The meeting was so secret that no one knows until now.

Long lay off, cack handed, eyes shut, left handed, backhand, forehand……you name it…………………..you’re cut. ;)

Just remember his back will be shot to bits at the moment as he's just done a flitting :D

(flitting - removed his possessions from one property and safely positioned then in a second, new , property. aka moved hoose !)

Fabian tells a story involving a guy called John, flying wedges and a place called Muckhart :D :D!

Could it be a coincidence??
