Next years Ryder cup - the forums version

For those who weren't around at the time, we had three matches at Goswick just South of Berwick. Cost is going to be dependant on the location. The time of year is also going to be a factor in getting a good cost for an event like this. All three events so far have been played either early season or late season as geting two rounds on a Friday & Saturday at a members club is quite challenging to say the least. Even more so when you take the numbers into consideration for a R C type event. We had 30-32 on our second event at Goswick and that was probably too big to keep play moving well on a busy course. Goswick was initially due to the fact we had a contact within the club who managed to get a great deal for the two rounds we played. We went back the following two years and again used contacts within the club to help get us great deals. On each of these occassions we paid considerably less than the best of the published offers that the club had on the go. Year two was £45 for the two days golf if I remember correctly.

Going to a hotel resort type course will be an expensive weekends golf, so needs to be carefully thought out and planned and the hotel needs to buy in to the aims of the event ( speaking from experience here) to make the thing go well.

It'd be great to see a RC event run again, but as has previously been mentioned, getting a venue in a location to suite everyone will be the biggest hurdle. I was involved in pulling together the second event we held and I can tell you, there's hell of a lot of work needing done behind the scenes to get an event like this off the ground. That was with a venue that was supportive and accommodating.

Best of luck to whoever picks up the reins on this, it's hard work but it'd be a great weekends golf.

Well said that man!

I agree this could be a really good event but timing is crucial. It would be a shame if it was held close to the H4H day. The amount of work put in by Rich and Rick is immense and I don't believe anything should detract from their efforts.

Maybe a date in the spring would work although if thinking about next year, the Aberdeen trip is already in the calendar.

Am sure H4H is great, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Those who might not want to go to HFH are entitled to do their own thing aren't they?

Of course......why wouldn't it be? All I'm suggesting is to pick a date that doesn't clash with H4H.

The OP stated a big group. I just thought you would have more chance of a big group if it didn't clash with another forum meet. just my opinion. H4H is traditionally beginning of October as we get better rates from clubs, and it didn't clash with other meets.:mmm:

To make it a decent "Ryder Cup" style event, you are looking at ideally getting 24 players to give you 12 players in each team.
One 4BB match does not a Ryder Cup make.
I personally think that you'd struggle to get commitment from 24 guys to give up 2/3 days (with a couple in reserve to counter for the inevitable bomb outs) so close to the H4H day.
I'm not saying that the H4H day should take precedent over any other forum meet, far from it. But most of the forum stalwarts, the guys that regularly go on meets, will be attending H4H, it's as simple as that.
With proper organisation, this could be a goer, but in my experience you need two guys to take it by the horns and jointly organise it.
Whether you have Scotland v England, North v South, or whatever, one person takes control of one team, one the other.
As DCB points out above, these big events take a lot of organising.
