Rory got MBE 14 years ago.
Most likely a wait until playing career is at an end for Knighthood consideration. As happened with Faldo - MBE 1988 and Knighthood 2009.

I’m baffled how this ‘works’ I’m sure they’re deserved in whatever metric is used but how is it some sports stars wait 40 years+ while others (comparatively speaking) have barely got over their hangovers

They should just give to people that deserve them.
That doesn’t include sports people , actors,musicians and especially civil servants and politicians.
