new rule reguarding phones

Our club secretary informed me that of jan 1st 2012 no one will be allowed to use a phone with gps on it that a capable of downloading apps it is now against the rules

seems like a very sweeping statement. True in many respects but not 100% accurate.

There is no reason that the 1st Jan 2012 has to be used as the specifics of the rule have not changed in the 2012 amendments.

Well I have a copy of the new 2012 rule book courtesy of GM and there is nothing in there that I have seen that says anything has changed. The use of gps is covered under a local rule at each club and as far as I know the matter is still the same - you can only use it if it doesn't have a compass!

We are lucky that ours is an ex Rules official and has issued guidelines on our notice board that has been very helpful. He may not be as good on the constituitonal side of things and not let 21+ handicappers join the club though (am i on the worng thread )

sounds about right.

as i'm aware it's only a local rule where commitee's take it upon themselves to have the rule.

i think the issue with the phones is you can have access to wind information etc......

Been the rule at ours for a while now, but only in comps. Used to be able to us the blackberry with GPS, but our local rule was changed to encompass all phones with GPS, not just the iphone.

Can't beleive how a little power can go a long way with some people. What a ludicrous ruling and an inditement of poor management. I'd be showing hima copy of the 2012 rules and askig him to justify how they came to the local ruling if they did at all
