i started playing golf recently and bought a set of taylormade burner irons with graphite shafts. after visiting a professional for a lesson he told me that i would need to change to a steel shaft at some point. i am looking at a set of used ping s57 irons. Does anyone have any thoughts on these irons for a relative beginner?

you should ask the professional....only he will know why you will need to change to steel shafts, and therefore whether these clubs are appropriate (you haven't said which shafts they have....which is rather important because not all steel are the same!)

if you are going to take this professionals advice in the first place, stick with him/her.

They are a better player iron. I would say they are totally unsuitable for a beginner. I have not personally hit them, so that is conjecture. But these are clubs that were not built with the beginner in mind.

If you like Ping then you should be looking at G-series, before these.

Otherwise there are any number of clubs from all manufacturers that would be in the Game Improver category and more suited to your needs. How about some burners with steel shafts?

Welcome,

Graphite shafts tend to be lighter than steel shafts and are more suitable for older folk.

But X100 shafts? These are not for beginners either. They are damn stiff, having used them.

I would suggest R300 or maybe S300 - as has been said talk to the pro who made the initial suggestion.

I can perhaps see why your pro would suggest steel if you swing quickly but I fear the clubs you are looking at are aimed at better player. The Ping G range would be a good starting point and there isn't a world of difference between the current G20 and the predecessor the G15 which should be available at a good price.

I'd be having a deeper conversation with the pro about the switch the shafts that would suit and why he wants you to chase as you are just beginning

Shaft flex has nothing to do with ability, it is concievable that a beginner could need x flex shafts but it's more likely that you are thrashing at the ball rather than using good technique to produce the swingspeed. Best bet is to stick with the lessons for the time being, work on developing better technique then see where your swing is in a few months time. Then look at new sticks, taking into account advice from your pro.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice guys, my pro gave me a couple of things to work on and said to come back to him in the new year maybe for another lesson. He said if I was to continue playing regularly that I would be better with steel shafts due to my swing speed. So I was looking at cheap second hand sets just as a stop gap till maybe end next year then the idea was to get fitted for a decent set. But as advised I will speak more with him

It is conceivable, but when someone like Luke Donald has used S300's throughout his career, it's highly unlikely that an X100 shaft will help a beginner achieve their early potential. I think the caution calls on this occasion were spot on!

Yes, isn't that what I was saying
