New irons for mid handicapper

So many SGI now have sleeker toplines, I don't get why anyone would say they're getting clubs detrimental to their ball striking to suit their eye.

Go Titleist AP1. Loads of forgiveness and beautiful.

Hadn't really thought about Cobra to be honest. Might be a silly question but any reason why the Cobra S3 Pro's are on your list and not the Cobra AMP irons?

From looking at pictures the AMP look a bit more bulkier with a thicker topline. I just prefer to look down at a thin topline and a more compact head, just more pleasing on my eye.

Personally, if I have something that's working, like yours obviously are, I'd keep them until they either break or the R&A make them illegal

My wife recently offered me the option to get fitted for a new driver for Christmas, but I've decided to decline based on the fact my 630 works well enough.

Can recommend the Razr X Tour - had mine 18 months and very happy with them.
AP2's would be another good bet as would MP53's if you can find them - maybe 59's....
Personally I wasn't keen on the i20 but they are a good club....

Been reading and following this with great interest as a change is on the horizon.

I agree with previous comments about not following the "pigeon hole" marketing of what is suitable for a low, mid or high handicapper, just try as many as possible and make your own informed decision and buy what feels the most comfortable.

From the OP's list and that of Homer's I had a hard look and read on the Razr X Tour and the AP2's as I had been using some friends MP53's just before falling ill and really liked them and those mentioned fall into the same similar category.

The Callaway's seem stronger with their lofts so it really is a case of trying out all three, or possibly 4 if I include the i20's, which I intend to do early in the New Year.

I us AP2s and have played a couple of rounds with AP1s recently. If I'm honest, you can't go wrong with either. The AP2s have a better feel to them and obviously look better at address being less clunky. The AP1s feel heavier to me. I wouldn't swap AP2s for AP1s throuh choice but if I had to use them, I wouldn't be too upset.

Not tried the other ones you mention but if it helps, I'm 37, play off 10 and still think I can improve so we aren't too different on those fronts.

Of course you can improve at your age, that's why I asked the question...Definately AP2s ......looks, balance, feel got it all. At 38 I would think very low H/c well within your goals if you have the time. Remember low scoring is from around 100 yards in. Putting and wedging..How many wedges do you carry?

Hi,

I'm looking to upgrade my irons in the New Year and was after some advice/feedback.

Have got myself down to 10.9 over the summer/autumn and want to hit the ground running when the new season starts with a push towards single figures.

Have been reading lots of reviews on irons suitable for low to mid handicappers and have tried a few out on the range. Have no real allegiance to any brand and to be honest there isn't much between the ones I've tried. The following are the ones I've tried/am considering:

Titleist AP1 & AP2
Ping i20
Callaway RAZR X Tour

Anyone have any experience of using these, good or bad?? Any others similar to the above anyone would like to recommend?

I'm currently using some hand-me-down Mizuno MX17 irons.

You have already achieved a respectable handicap, so obviously have some ability. It is possible to play professional golf with clubs ranging from butter knife blades through to super game improvement shovels, so part of the issue is what suits your eye and feel preferences.

In terms of your choices, they are a slightly mixed bunch. AP1 and Razr X Tour are more or less game improvement irons, but i20 and AP2 are players irons. The Callaway X Forged would be a similar choice to the AP2, and there are Mizuno models which cover this spectrum. The MP64 would be similar to the AP2/X Gorged and the JPX to the AP1/X Tours. The JPX Pro is somewhere in between. The best thing is to go somewhere that has a wide range of demo irons and hit loads and start to get an idea what you like. Then, once you have done that, get a pro to help refine your choice and choose a suitable shaft and set up.

That's a good question... Ultimately there is nothing wrong with them it's more a case of trying to improve and getting even more out of my game. Had the same dilemma about a year ago when considering changing my driver. Previous one worked well but the new one has given me more yardage and been part of dragging my handicap down!

Currently have pitching wedge (46 degree), Sand wedge (55 degree) and Lob wedge (60 degree).

Having looked at the numerous replies I think it's a case of getting on the range and spending a lot of time with all the different options. Slightly different to my normal approach to shopping!!

I know not everyone agrees but I carry 48, 52. 56 & 60...10 to 15 yards between clubs depending on length of backswing. You will score better. Even on what you are carrying the lofts are erratic. Yes! I’m sure someone else will know different.
