Went to the range today with just a 6 iron, the ground was wet & abit mushy, hadnt played in these conditions this winter as ive been playing around with my putting, so went to hit a ball & it sort of went straight up in the air about half a foot & straight back down again, distance about 4inches, I dont even know what to call this shot, its almost like a tiny 60 degree wedge shot with a 6 iron, it kept happening till it to dark to carry on, I tried different ball positions, gripping down, wider stance, 95% of shots did this, from my observations it looked like the club was going under the ball & seemed the ball was spinning alot (I think) & as if the ball ir rolling up the face & dropping down once the iron has cleared, never had anything like it before & its driving me mad.

Impossible for the club to be going under it, unless it was on a really high tee. More likely just bouncing off the top of the ball, knocking it into the matt and bouncing up a few inches.

Can't believe you could do that more than 10 times on the trot on purpose though, so you have a real skill. :p

Sounds bizarre to keep doing that, I agree its a top you're hitting which on soft ground is just popping up.

Are you swaying a lot laterally? If your weight is hanging on the back foot (i.e there is no momentum shift to the left during the downswing) then that could be the reason for the topping. Gotta get through the ball.

Really rotate the hips through the shot so that your chest is facing the target at the end.
Crucial to keep your eye on the ball too, maybe you're looking for where its gone before you've hit it? Often the case for topping.
Another cause can be swinging too hard and fast, ease off the throttle for a smoother action.
