Hi there folks

I am on the verge of upgrading drives/woods and irons, have the cheap dunlop stuff you get from Sports Direct at the mo, but feel as though I should move on to some decent stuff. I dont have a handicap but feel as though I am getting better, will also be having lessons soon. Anyway, just wondering about advice from you guys about what clubs you think would suit me best?

Cheers

No one can possibly answer that accuratly. We could recommend certain types for you i.e beginner clubs etc but really everyone is different. There are so many different options out there the best thing for you to do is go try out everything within your budget.

Hi NQT.

This subject gets covered regularly but don't worry. The main thing is to try lots of different clubs before stumping up any cash. MD and Benross are 2 of the better lower end manufacturers and they make decent kit at decent prices. You'll never go far wrong with Ping,Callaway Mizuno or TaylorMade if your money stretches that far.

I'd go for the best you can afford - but do try them first.

I was really lucky because I ditched my regals (no not ciggies) and bought a set of X20's off the shelf. I was Lucky because they suit me well. It could of been so different.

What is your budget? handicap(what do you play too)? Normal shot shape/strike/results like?

The first set I had was DJ100's by Howson who turned into Hippo (I think). Then a set of TopFlite Tour Oversize. They were fantastic by comparison and were a much underated club back in the early 90's. A non-oversize version was used on tour by the likes of Peter Baker!

depends what you mean by 'decent'; good quality, top manufacturer, good results. you can achieve the latter without laying out wads and get the former without going to the 'name' brands. (and all custom fitted, but that's a bit soon for your needs - unless your height/arm length are not 'average'.)

my second set of irons were Ben Sayers M7 (package), cast cavity back graphites. For what they are they were 'decent', not sparkling but I could hit them cleanly and far (at times, I was (am) still learning).

my current set are forged cavity backs, rifle shafts; on sale, end of production £99 (£499 when first released). A big technological step up on the M7's - not least better materials)

i was in exactly the same position - tried golf, liked it - went to sports soccer and bought a dunlop set for £80.
had a few lessons and went to AG and bought a customised set of Mizuno MX-19's for about £250 and believe me you'll feel the difference, most notibly (in my case anyway) with the stiffer shafts.

Interesting first post holly2008. No hello, no foreplay, just straight into recommending a commercial site no one has heard of.

Hmmm.

I suggest you start the lessons first and get advice on clubs from the pro. You might even get a good deal from him/her.

Had a set of blades given to me initialy. Couldn't hit them for toffee. Bought my first set back in the early 90's, Dunlop RMS cavities I think, had a rubber 'shock' absorber in them and were quite narrow soled. Didn't play for donkeys years, and when I restarted, after about a year I bought the current set of MX19s and eventually replaced the other clubs as well.

The next set of irons will only arrive when (if) I get down to 15 h'cap. At the mo, it's the MP52s that I like the look of.

I started out with a completely mixed set of things that I found somwhere.
I then moved to Macgregor tourneys, and kept these for a long time before getting my current clubs.
While playing the macgregors I did buy some Mizuno wedges and then my current Clevelands.

My first driver was a second hand Callaway great big bertha, I then got a Taylor made R330 and finally moved onto the Ping G10 I have now.

On another topic I'd avoid ebayoyo, they've spamed a couple of other message boards I belong to also, and seem very dodgy to me.

Bought the cheapest set I could 18 years ago to get going, then moved on to a set of Pings (Eye2) 2 years later. They lasted me well and I loved them. Upgraded them to a newer Ping model (i5) two years ago. Found a brand I liked, got fitted and feel lucky. I love them, but it can be so personal.

1st expensive upgrade i got was ping eye 2 berylium copper.
Everyone was muling about them. They were supposed to be the dogs b****x. I ordered mine from the pro, white dot, waited 8 weeks for them (as there was a waiting list) they arrived all nicely wrapped and looking soooo good.

Tried as I might i couldn't play with them, absolutely HATED them. Sold them after 6 weeks to a mate who I played regular with and got back almost what I payed for them as he didn't want to wait for new ones (supply and demand)

Moral of this story is, just because it is new and lots of people recommend them doesn't mean they work.

What suits one person doesn't suit another. Too many variables.

Try as many as you can, don't start thinking i like x,y or z or you will convince yourself that they are the ones when in practice they probably won't be.

Hi mate,

It seems your position is similar to mine, I don't know how long you have been playing or if you have had anyone to help with your swing.

I had been hitting the driving range and played a couple of rounds of golf for about a month and a half before my first lesson, I had basically made up my own swing, stance and grip.

I could hit the ball and I also thought I could get better with more practice, after seeing the Pro how wrong could I be.

He changed my stance, grip and swing which to me was a relief because I knew I was not doing it properly however I was not to know better!

A couple of weeks on and perseverance I went to the range last night, 25 balls and something just clicked, only duffed one ball.

The clubs I use currently are a loan, unmarked budget set. I aim to get a set around December, I have no budget, not because I am loaded but I just don't see the point in shelling out for something I enjoy and having to watch the pennies, If I cant afford it I just save until I can.

Come December I aim to go and try a large variety of clubs and go with the best that suits me, there are certain clubs I like the look of at the moment like the Mizuno MX-200 range however I will find out in a few months.

I guess what I am trying to say is, if you are getting lessons soon, don't buy before then as the pro may change the way you hit the ball. Get your proper set up then go for a proper fitting. :)
