Hi

I'm interested in any views on whether changing from old clubs (I'm talking 20 yr old clubs) to new shineys will deliver significant benefit. Does new club technology really help and why, or does familiarity and comfort with current clubs count for more?

I'm half way through a 12 week rehab period after injury so with no golf I've been looking at other golf issues to scratch the itch and new shineys is one area I've been researching. I play with RAM Laser fx irons and although old I really like them and since getting the bug to play regularly again a year ago have seen my scores drop from high 90's to hi/mid 80's so I seem to be doing ok, but do want to get better.

So, are my old clubs holding me back even though I like them and would new shineys deliver the level of improvement the club manufacturers seem to promise.

I would have to say if your looking at getting a new set of irons then have a fitting done. Most of the time it doesn't cost you anything if your buying the clubs from that supplier.
I wouldn't believe all the hype from manufacturers as they are just trying to sell as many new products as possible but there has been a large improvement in iron technology over the last 20 years so I really can see it helping. I would wait until you've have a few weeks back playing and feel your swing is where it was before your lay off and go see your club pro for some advice on where to go.

A couple of guys at my place had fittings last year and both have made great improvements in their games.

When I changed from a set of irons from circa 1997 to a more recent set a few years ago I did notice a big change in relation to the spin generated as the old set had v-grooves which had become a bit worn. The newer set had nice fresh box grooves.

As well as that, iron heads have become much more sophisticated in terms of cavities and weighting over the past 20 years, and there are more shaft options so depending on what you are going from and to you may well see a significant difference.

If you don't want to go for new set I think you will still see a difference over the 20 year old clubs even with a s/h hand set from the last 5-6 years.

Having said that I'm playing with a new set of 10 year old clubs and love them!
