Hi to you all

Played 9 holes today, damp but good for December, shot 3 over which is good for me off 10.5.

Hit all but one fairway and 6 out of 9 greens....putting not up to normal missed 2 good birdie chances and took 17 puts my average at the moment being 16 (for 9 holes).

But no great joy because although driving very well the approach shots chipping and putting were all average!!!!

I have found in the past that "good scores" are often somewhat bland and that may be because the good shots are good to OK but the bad are NOT to bad.

Anyway pleased with my last golf in France before six weeks in Perth.

Happy Christmas to you all.

I find that when I have scored well I have invariably missed more fairways and greens than I either remembered or should have done for my handicap. Looking back it is easy to forget a good chip to around 3 foot and a single putt.

The secret is to enjoy the actual score and not the way it was compiled. We'd all love to hit every fairway and be miles down it and then hit every green but we aren't capable so as long as you are beating your handicap and enjoying it that is all that matters.

Enjoy the sun in Perth and happy christmas if you are not on here before then

I actually get pleasure from the score and how I achieve it, its funny that when I play a text book type of round I dont get as much pleasure as I do from the kind of round where you are off target a lot, recovering or taking really difficult shots from bad lies and making sure you dont three putt, but making a damn good score.

I used to be SFS. Single-Figure-Snob. The shot had to be right, the trajectory correct, the shape just so. Fairway to green or disappointment and frustration.

Bugger that now!!

Get it in the hole even if it means Army Golf up another fairway followed by a jammy chip.

Its all about getting it in the hole. Yes its nice to hit fairways and greens but they count for nothing at the end of the day.

It is amazing how whatever standard you play at, however many you get round in you will always be left thinking- what if that put dropped? What if I didn't land in that bunker, etc etc. Even pros who shoot a 60 will think about how it could have been a 59. Thats golf though mate.

Absolutely right.
And how many times have you come off the 18th thinking you've had a great round, tot up your score and find you've only got 32 points, but other times you feel like you've played like a drain but have 38 points?

It's a funny old game

We had a great thread on this a while back. Strike it well and score average. Or strike it poorly and get a good score, would be good to get some new views on this.

I had my best score of the year on Thursday, 38 stableford.
I have had a very bad year with illness and side effects from medication. Now that I have recovered, my problem is a mental block which prevents me from hitting irons correctly, slapping away right.
I read all these posts from you lucky people with envy but from now it's onwards and upwards. :)

at my level the satisfaction comes from getting out of the trouble a lack of skill and experience has created. hitting a green in three from deep in the jungle can hold, almost, as much satisfaction as a well constructed birdie.
