hi everyone im new to the golf game and only been playing since oct last year...im really struggling to use my driver
i cant get much hight or get it straight. im currently using a yonex 10.5 loft with stiff flex shaft is this a bad choice of driver for a beginner?

quite possibly, but ultimately it takes ages to even get vaguely reliable with a driver.

ive spoke to one of the pro's at my local pro shop and he said i should be using a driver with 12 or even 15 degrees of loft but im finding it hard to find a driver with that much loft

15 is a bit excessive, but I take the point. Try some out (when you find one) and see how you go. Trouble is, no amount of extra loft will help you if you're just starting out....you might get the ball up easier, but accuracy is different thing altogether.

Try and get down to a golf shop (like American Golf) that can analyse your swing whilst you're trying the club out. Their software can also tell you how much height your getting and it will track the ball path too.

Stiff shafted clubs tend to be for those that swing the club pretty quickly (over 95mph, if I recall correctly).
If your swing speed is lower than that (they can tell you) you might be better suited for a regular flex shaft.

I tried a Reg. flex driver and hit it O.K, but ultimately, I swing the club around 98-100mph and found a noticable difference when I tried the Stiff flex)

Also, more loft will help with the slice/hook forgiveness but won't eliminate a hook or slice altogether.

There's nothing wrong with the driver.
If your swing is no good another driver isn't going to make it better.
Learn how to hit the Yonex properly.

Go to the range and try a few things out.

Make sure your alignment is correct, ball position correct, set a nice wide base with feet wider than your shoulders, keep your head still, turn don't slide your hips on the backswing, don't overswing on the backswing and swing nice and smooth - don't try to knock the spots off it, finish with a full follow through and balanced, hold the pose until the ball hits the floor around the 250 yard marker :)

The biggest mistake I made when I started was to try and 'hit' the driver into the next county.....it's a swing not a hit!

Ive tried all sorts drivers over the last few years, and beleive me ,its the way you hit them whatever loft that makes the difference, ive settled on a ping rapture for now 12 degree, but i still get better hits with my tm 3 wood.leave the 15 degrees alone

My advice is simple. Book a lesson with a pro and he'll save you a fortune on a new driver but sorting the swing out in a few minutes. After that it's up to you to do the drills and make the changes permanent

I'm not surprised finding a 15deg driver is hard because it's called a 3-wood :) and quite a lofted one at that, my 3w is 14deg.

Agree with the chaps who say go and have a lesson, it won't be the club that is broken.

I have a yonex driver, I tried 6 or 7 others and I got the best results from the yonex.

My driver lesson made a huge difference for me - there are a few different things to consider for the driver swing - ask a pro to help you - or watch some youtube videos, there's load out there...

How to...

Forget the driver. Forget any other club - get yourself one club - anything from a six iron to a nine iron and hit it. Then hit it again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......and again......

You need to get yourself a reliable swing before you can start to hit other clubs.

If you don't believe me, Seve learnt to play the game with a stick. He'd hit stones. He didn't go and buy a driver with a stiff shaft, etc.

Nail the basics and the rest comes easy - apparently......
