N/R today... Rule inquiry??

had a n/r today early in my round, i basically put my 2nd shot o/b and because i couldnt find it i was told i had to n/r..

I took the shot from in the trees and seen the flight of the ball and thought yep thats to the right of the green but as i walked up there i couldnt see it. i thought i could drop a ball in the line of the flight near the o/b fence as thats where it was heading and i thought it would of been a 2 shot drop??

You would have had to go back to where you played your 2nd from, drop a ball and play your 4th from there

You never HAVE to NR. If ever you think you are in trouble, out of bounds, in deep rough, hit a provisional ball. Oh, read up on some basic rules.

I say;

In the event of not being able to find a ball and not having played a provisional because there seemed no need (at the time), best to talk to your partners, ask to go back and maybe let the group behind through.

There must be a limit though to how often one hits a prov' ball though? If I hit a prov' everytime I had a 1% concern, it would take me 5 hours to get round. I hardly ever hit them. Then again, I also haven't had to walk back to the tee since October 2008. Odd that, especially as I can't see 200 yards as anything but a blur.

It takes a lot less time to hit another ball than to walk back to where you've just come from. Things must be pretty bad if you need a provisional on nearly every shot. Even putts?

How do you read a situation by the OP to a situation that there must be a limit on how often you hit a prov. Where does the 1% come in

I hit 7 provisionals today. Driving was junk. Shot 8 over on the front, 1 over on the back, solid 9 over, bang on h/cap.

How do you read a situation by the OP to a situation that there must be a limit on how often you hit a prov. Where does the 1% come in

I think what I was trying to say is every time a player hits a ball and you don't see it land there is a possibility it's lost. If I miss a fairway or green left/right/long and don't know for sure it's landed safe, there's always a bell that goes off in my mind to say "maybe I should hit a provisional ball?" I won't hit one if I'm 99% sure it's down there somewhere. Maybe a player gets experienced over the years as to when it might really be in trouble....dunno, hard to explain....I do hit provisionals more often on links courses I must say, 'cause almost anything off the fairway could be lost, so then it's clearly more than 1% doubt...

If you're lucky, you'll have experienced playing partners who will tell you if they think you need a provisional. Always take their advice.

I kind of know what your saying but I stick to what I said, it's your ball, if you're not sure, play a provisional. If you're playing a course you know you'll have a pretty good idea of what's what. If you're playing a course you don't know and it's a comp, play a provisional. It's all very well listening to your partner's but how many times have you lost a ball after being told it would be OK? Like I said, it's your round, your score and it doesn't take very long.

Come on Bigfoot. The reason you had to pose the question in the first place was that you didn't know the rules and nor did your playing partners apparently.

no i didnt know the rule but the people i was playing with did as they told me a had to go back and re take the shot otherwise i would have to N/R. I just wanted to ask the question on here for peoples views on it, not to get slagged off!!

Im new to the comp scene so i wasnt sure what was right, thats why i was asking on here!!!

The people i was playing with were looking for their balls whilst i was taking my shot so i was the only one that seen it and as i said i was confident that it would be up near the green!!!
