My Swing Speed Journey

It may not do your dodgy shoulder any favours.
Weirdly my dodgy shoulder has more issues when it’s not being worked. Swinging a club the shoulder is actually in a good place at the moment and I’m not convinced a speed stick would put that much more stress on it.

Plus with the physio we’re working on how I can keep the shoulder improving whilst playing and working.

How do people find speed sticks, I’m intrigued and considering some, I do a lot of gym work as I enjoy it and need it for work anyways so I generally have good ground work to generate speed. But also have a pretty lazy swing tempo so been thinking about getting a sped stick to go with the gym work and add a few MPH especially on driver ball speed.

As you very likely have high physical capabilities I’d be surprised if you didn’t get quite a lot of benefit from it. It’s all about breaking down the neurological speed limiter/regulator that keeps us quite a long way below our physical max.

I’m an occasional-only gym goer in an occupation that is atrocious for killing mobility/flexibility and have still gradually got decent gains (5mph and hoping to get another 5) despite taking it very gradually, recognising I’m no athlete. I’d bet your potential gains are both much higher and much quicker than mine.

I’ll take the compliment I don’t get many 😂

Any recommendations on speed sticks to use. I’m not worried about all singing and dancing and I’ve never used them before so I wouldn’t know where to start and with what weights.

I really like my Rypstick, although I'm having problems with the app that all the tutorial videos are no longer working. But tbh, I don't think you necessarily need to follow a 'plan'.

I've been continuing with my kettlebell training and the latest speed session I did I was at 113mph, so pretty happy with how things are going.

So I could just araldite an old drill chuck on to the end of a shaft and give that a swing then?:D

I like them but that's probably because I've been lucky enough to never get injured when using them. Maybe I'm not trying hard enough?

This winter I've always hit balls with driver after them which has helped a lot. For a few years I would just do the sticks for a month or two before the start of the season but not hit balls and for the first couple of weeks I would spray balls all over the place. This year, even although I'm the fastest I've ever been my driver has been good over the winter.

I also use them as a warm-up before the first tee.

I use the original Superspeed sticks, you can probably pick them up 2nd hand for fairly cheap on eBay. I just like having 3 different shafts and no need to faff around switching the weight over. I still do the Superspeed initial plan of 3 swings with each of them and then 3 green at the end, I rarely do the left handed swings or the step change drill. The only difference is that I'll probably do about 20 to 30 swings with the green one, gradually getting faster as a warm up and to get me up to speed. I know my fastest speeds with the green on Trackman are around 124mph so I'll gradually work my way up from about 95mph to 115mph before starting the first set of 3.

The only thing I would highly recommend with them is some sort of radar that measures the speed. Doesn't have to be exact, just consistent and I think it's a must. I've got an old Sports Sensor Swing Speed Radar, the only thing it does is measure swing speed. It's not accurate (fastest on that is 133mph) but it's consistent and close enough that my speeds on it match up to Superspeeds chart of around 110mph with driver when flat out.

Might give them a look and see what I can pick up. I’ve never done any dedicated speed work, I’d be interested to see where I can get as feels a natural progression in my game as I’ve always built it around wedge and approach play. So some extra ball speed at the top end of the bag would be nice to see.

If you have never done any I'd bet you will pick up about 5mph in the first month, it's then up to you to find the middle and control the face. As I said, hitting balls with driver after the session seemed to be very, very beneficial this winter.

Yeah...thats along the lines of my thinking....but then our course has dried out nicely and on Sunday I hit some monsters (for me) that TBH I wouldnt want any more distance on as it would put me in trouble!! I guess it would be nice with some extra speed to then hit 3-wood and gain a little bit of accuracy.

Currently umming and ahhing between some speed training sticks and the new ShotScope LM, or a Capto EZ putting analysis system.

Sounds like we have the same dilemma. I have my eye on speed sticks and the new LM1, not sure I can sneak both past Mrs M at the moment so it’s definitely going to be one or the other.
