My Swing Speed Journey

Didn’t know that. That’s actually a hilarious feature. Wonder what it would make of mine .
It seems to do it for each swing and it can be different, I guess based on the faults it sees. Looked at another one and it captured my half arsed practice swing and it said I was like a palm tree blowing in the wind and I was as stiff as the flagstick. 😂

I did the speed training section of it, 3 swings and then it points out flaws of rotation, wrist angles and pelvic height. My shoulder rotation is fine but I cast the club massively on the way down and I’m very inconsistent with the pelvic thing. The full report said I have too much pelvic sway on the backswing, I stand up, I’ve got a reverse pivot and I don’t re-centre on the backswing. On the way down I throw away all my wrist angles far too early, have too much slide towards the target and don’t use the ground enough to stop and go up. Other than that, it was all good.

Maybe time for a lesson over at Hexham, they have the ground force plates.

3 more Rypstick sessions since the post above.

1/20: Baseline dropped from 114mph on 1/18 to 109mph this day. My body was feeling pretty exhausted and I probably should've skipped the speed training and just done some light cardio or something.

1/21: Baseline rose back up to 114mph, had a few random swings 120+ but when I was actually recording my 5 post-drill swings for my new baseline I couldn't get it up that high.

1/24: Just finished today and got baseline up to 119mph, 3 or 4 swings 121+

Snowstorm knocked out my chance to hit the sim today so still haven't hit any actual golf balls since beginning the speed training.
1/26: Baseline up 1mph to 120mph
1/28: Baseline up 4mph to 124mph
1/30: Woke up and my legs were pretty sore after leg day on 1/29. Baseline back down to 119mph. Had a swing at 126mph I think but just couldn't find the consistency.

Finally made it to the sim to hit some balls for the first time since starting Rypstick. Last time I was there was 12/30 where my average Driver Clubhead speed was 106.3mph. That was before using the Rypstick. Today coasting my average was 112mph. I think I can get it a little higher when my legs aren't as sore and my lead shoulder stops aching haha. Swung a little extra at one and got to almost 116mph

My cheap little radar may actually be more accurate than I expected when positioned correctly its just hard to find the sweet spot to place it. All of these baseline numbers inputted into the Rypstick app have been with 2 weights in the Ryptick instead of using my actual driver. That changes the swing weight I'm sure but also the aerodynamics. Driver definitely has some more air resistance that slows it down, and obviously when at the sim and swinging at an actual ball SS is going to decrease as well.

I already knew this but yesterday at the sim also confirmed it even more for me, I need to go get fit for a driver. My backspin numbers are way too high and I am not getting optimal launch/flight. I launch the ball pretty high and I have always had the issue with ballooning drives that have pretty decent carry but get zero rollout. Need to find some head/shaft combo that gets me a more piercing ball flight.

Impressive numbers indeed!

When I bought my new driver the other day, I think my clubhead speed maxed out at 95mph, I was very disappointed in that, but it means there's lots of room for improvement. .

I've not done a session since 25th as I could feel my wrists getting sore, so just hitting the workouts at the moment.

Managed to get the green stick to 125mph last night on Trackman.

Hit balls afterwards and couldn’t crack the 160mph, fastest was only 158.7mph. Definitely plateaued, think I’d probably need to do 3 sessions a week if I wanted to get faster.

The encouraging thing though is that I can get my ball speed to 153mph while playing courses and not feeling like I’m swinging out my boots which isn’t far from the 155mph I was hoping to get to.

Yep I am definitely feeling the plateau as well. Got baseline to 124 a few sessions ago and now the last 3-4 sessions I will hit that number maybe once. After watching some Fast Eddie videos I definitely agree with his take that bigger gains can be made by actually hitting balls while swinging all out vs. the standard swing speed trainers. Subconsciously we will all hold a little back when swinging at a ball but if we can train to break that there are some more gains left in the tank that may not be there with SpeedSticks, Rypstick, etc.

Agreed, that's why I've been hitting balls after doing the speed training. Even the first few swings with driver after it are pretty tentative. For some reason I can really go after irons hard, as I said in another post I can now get my 6 iron to 96mph yet a flat out feeling with driver is only 108mph.

Yeah you’d be expecting to hit about 113-116 with driver with that swing speed

Gutted I cracked my phone screen and needed to buy a new phone the swing speed stuff will have to wait a bit longer

So I did a little more digging into this and found a document from Foresight with a table for club and ball speeds.

Club and Ball speed data.jpg

My iron swing and ball speeds are right in those ball parks, probably between 2-3mph slower inn ball speed in PW-6 on normal swings. i.e. 6 iron on a normal swing is around 91mph and 125mph ball speed. As I've said, if I really try to hit a 6 iron hard I can get it up to 96mph and 134mph ball speed. I can't get anywhere near those 3w and driver ball speeds though, fastest ever with 3 wood was 150mph and driver is 160mph but when playing courses they are typically in the 145-148mph range for 3 wood and 149-153mph for driver.

If I can match those iron ball speeds on what feel like normal swings but can't get near the ball speeds on the 3w and driver with flat out, balls to the wall swings then I think I might need a lesson or two.
