I set off from home yesterday morning at 6:55am, my car telling me it was -3. Tee time was 1 hour away, surely it'll warm up right?

Nope, it was -4 when I was standing on the tee at 7:50....must be mad.

Anyway, it was my first outing with my new SLDR driver and was gagging to play after having a couple of weeks off.

The first 13 holes were a nightmare, frosty frozen greens meant that putts were amazingly slow (which surprised us) but that pitches/chips etc just bounced and skipped their way through greens. It was a real challenge.

The good news was that the SLDR worked really well. I've never been massive off the tee but can normally bet on a 220-230 yard shot before it pitches and pretty much stops. My first drive with the SLDR - 253 yards :whoo:

Only real highlight of the round was a birdie 4 on the long par 5, unfortunately it was surrounded by a 9, three 7s and an 8 to leave me carding a 97 with 30 points off 18.

Our 17th is a long par 4 with a ditch at driving distance (approx. 255 yd carry), if you're long enough to get over it you'll be left with a 6-7 iron into the green or if you lay up short a 190-220 shot in.....so it pays to carry the ditch, if you can.

This hole was my main reason for looking to change drivers and get longer.....so my round had been building to this point, no pressure.....stand over the ball, relax the grip, don't collapse the wrists.....bang she starts sailing out, good height, nice flight, seems to hang in the air.....I start talking to the ball as it's in with a chance to clear the ditch, I really want this and then bang....we see some water splash into the air. We take the long walk up and there is my ball plugged into the upslope of the ditch, I was less than 20 cm from carrying the ditch....... nuts.

Roll on summer.

Good luck, you wouldnt find me out in those conditions nowdays, hot toddy by the fireplace in the clubhouse sounds more appealing :D

We played yesterday and the greens were frozen for about the first 7 or 8 holes. I found though I am a much better putter when the ground is covered in frost! They skate the first few feet at high speed before rolling to a very slow stop very quickly! I sunk a few 10 footers like that! As soon as the frost was gone it was back to my usual 5 foot past rubbishness! :)

I hit a 7 iron into the green on Saturday, pitched middle of the green, bounced about 20 foot in the air and shot over the back, eventually coming to rest at the base of a tree, fun times!

Not related but I also chipped in, only for the ball to bounce out of the hole again. No justice sometimes!

Frozen greens are 'fun'! Even better when the 1st hole is a Par 3 - with 3 sides water (or ice if it's really cold)!

Frozen fairways can be just as much fun too!

Normally back under the duvet for me if that's the case.

Are you allowed to play on frozen greens? I dont think we are allowed to play and be on green during wintertime,,, our 9 hole course is designed with wintergreens, but there are some restrictions on those greens as well. on the 18 hole course greens they also put up ropes around the green, to prevent skiiers and animals to be on the green................speaking of animals--we have from time to time wild boars plowing up fairways--but they seems to avoid the greens--so far

We did also have two funny incidents with frozen puddles in bunkers.....we had a chip shot that bounced in and straight out onto the green and then I hit a 185 yard shot into a green and came up short in the bunker. I'd created the perfect golf ball shaped hole on the front edge only for the ball to roll under the ice to the other side of the bunker. Genius!

I had a pitch that hit the green, bounced off into the pond behind, but bounced of that too and I was able to chip and putt for par!
