I remember reading a thread a while back about Opens and how they are good value so I thought I'd have a little look. As a result I've just sent off my entry form for East Berks in September. It's 36 holes medal, light lunch, meal and prizes for the princely sum of £42 - Bargain.

I know some people would be put off by 36 holes medal which probably explains the h'cap limit being quite high at 12 but there's no better test of yourself if you ask me.

You will love it. I was a bag of nerves on the tee at my first open as there was a big crowd watching.
If you have a solid pre shot routine it will help.
Have a great day and bring home the bacon.

This is one of the reasons I don't play Opens - apart from the risk of Banditry - I'd struggle to play 36 in a day and do myself justice.
The ankle just wouldn't hold up and even if it did I'd be barely able to walk for a day or 2 after. 27 I can handle, but even after Blackmoor last Summer I was in a bit of pain on the way home(and not only from the golf either!)..

There are some 18 hole events and even if they are value for money - Woburn @£90 it's still £90 for a round of golf..........

The secret is just go there to enjoy golf on good course for a fraction of the cost, in a competitive spirit, maybe meet some other decent people.

Lastly, but just as a bonus you can't beat walking away with a new pair of shoes, golf bag or being able to spend your winnings in the pro-shop.

Enjoy the day.

I play about 6 singles opens a year (never had a prize once - even though I was 4 under in one) - you should just breathe deeply and enjoy the course and company.

As far as banditry goes - I would not worry about that, it more a case of who has their day.

have a great day it will be the start of many you want to enter, not only opens these days there are many amateur tour events offerring good days out too.

enjoy!

plenty of 18 hole opens out there, just very few decent ones in our area Ian lol. Planning on trying to play a couple later in the year though

Ian have a look at the one at Hankley Common. 18 holes and you should get a practice round as well. Includes lunch and all for about £50. One of the best courses around here. It is also fairly flat, as I know old boys like you don't like hills !!

Oooops just realised it is 6 handicap plus. Forget you are now cat 1.

Oi You

I'll have you know I strolled up the 19th at Camberley the other day, having found the fairway and green, to make a regulation par!

And when I get to your age you can start calling me old!!:ears:

i would be a wreak if i carried my clubs for 36 holes. i have played 36 with a trolly and could barely move the next day. my course is very hilly, this may not help. i always kick myself for playing too many holes as it makes you suffer the next day. play 18, another 2 or so if your still hungry then its high stool time!

36 holes of medal is too tough for me at the moment. 3 holes is pushing it and the buffer zone is usually disapearing in the the mirror by the turn. Nice course though and at that time of year should be perfect. They do good scoff at East Berks too

Opens are really good imho having won £120 at one last year for the handicap prize, i had left and went home, it was only the next day when i phoned for the CSS that i was told i won, sheepishly had to go back and collect my winnings and apologise profusely for not turning up at the prizegiving, lesson learnt.

Good luck Hawkeye.
Definately my favorite way of playing good courses at a reduced rate.
With the chance of winning some good prizes.
We have 8-12 players that play 4-6 opens a year, the banter is great, but
also we take it quite serious.
We also have a fiver a man,10 pound a pair,adds a little spice.
