Muhammad Ali

Just watched the BBC tribute, what a legend, and so brave to battle on with such a debilitating illness.
I can remember waking up in the middle of the night to listen to his fights on the radio as a kid in the mid 70's with my dad.

RIP.......without a doubt the Greatest Sportsman and such an entertainer - his interviews with Parky were just brilliant.

Very sad day an absolute legend of sport and civil rights, he grew up in a world most of us wouldn't recognise due in no small part to him putting himself on the line.

Legend is a word that is overused but Muhammad Ali was a legend in everyone's eye and maybe the word only exists due to people looking for something to call him.

R.I.P the double greatest.

Yes, turned the TV on and was met with this sad news, a fantastic sportsman and a great character in and out the ring, a true great in every sence.

R.I.P Cassius

Thats a bit callous calling him that, a name he associated with slavery.

I found this strange also.

Didn't he take umbrage with Ernie Terrell for calling him this during the lead up to their fight?

and during ,he kept asking him what his name was ,when he didnt get an answer he tormented him with his boxing skills .to be honest that fight was very nasty ,Ali could and should have put him away very quickly but, he kept him in the fight by not going for the big shots ,rather he went to work with the jab and tore him to shreds.
it wasnt a fight that Ali was proud of .

The greatest combat athlete of all-time. Muhammad Ali changed the game. His pre-fight talking, his outlook on the fight game, his confidence, his style, his incredible technique. The man is an absolute legend of fighting and will be sorely missed. Joe Rogan shared one of Ali's most infamous moments on one of his most recent podcasts. This is what he drove Sonny Liston to do:

Was a different time back then and Ali was the cause of so many insane reactions from the people he was fighting, he was a genius when it came to mental warfare. What a hero. RIP Cassius Clay. The greatest of all-time.

This summed Ali up for me

No guard, no hugging, just pure evasion.

Timeless!

No-one anticipates incoming strikes like Ali did. Dominick Cruz put on a masterclass this past weekend when it comes to anticipation and strike avoidance, but the stuff Ali was doing was just on another level. Standing in front of Heavyweight powerhouses and avoiding their strikes like they're coming in slow motion is just craziness.

He was a boxer and a very good one but not a hero in my eyes and a long way from the greatest sportsman who has lived. He slid out of doing military service for no good reason.

Many of the things he said were pretty questionable. If he'd been white and said what he said about black people he'd have been slated.

Were you an adult during his career or are you just commenting on news reports etc?

you on the wind up?

Not sure if you read it earlier but:

“I ain’t draft dodging. I ain’t burning no flag. I ain’t running to Canada. I’m staying right here. You want to send me to jail? Fine, you go right ahead. I’ve been in jail for 400 years. I could be there for 4 or 5 more, but I ain’t going no 10,000 miles to help murder and kill other poor people. If I want to die, I’ll die right here, right now, fightin’ you, if I want to die. You my enemy, not no Chinese, no Vietcong, no Japanese. You my opposer when I want freedom. You my opposer when I want justice. You my opposer when I want equality. Want me to go somewhere and fight for you? You won’t even stand up for me right here in America, for my rights and my religious beliefs. You won’t even stand up for my right here at home"

R.I.P to the GOAT!!!!!....................

I watched his whole career - thanks and I do think he was very good but that's it. While his self promotion was occasionally entertaining a good deal of it wasn't.

You may not like my opinion and I realise the keyboard warriors will generally tend to be rude when some one challenges their view of the norm but that's also the right of expression and no guarantee of an intelligent debate.

Not at all, if like me, you were there all through his career I'm happy to accept what you posted is your opinion and you're fully entitled to express it

I do entirely disagree with you but then I am entitled to.
