Landed in a bunker this evening that had mud from a puddle that had recently dried up. Obviously I landed right in it. Horrible lie. One of my PPs claimed it was still casual water. Surely not?

You were right to be incredulous.

If you look at the Definition of casual water you will see that there has to visible water either before or after taking your stance:

"Casual water" is any temporary accumulation of water on the course that is not in a water hazard and is visible before or after the player takes his stance.

If the area is dried up, there won't be any visible water and it doesn't make any difference that maybe only a few hours previously there had been a large puddle.

Thanks Colin. My thoughts exactly. Doesn't make me feel better about the shot I had to play though. Mud, stones, unraked footmarks all conspiring against me! Got lucky when my thin hit the back of the bunker and popped in the air.

I'd have still preferred your lie, mine rolled into where water had created almost a series of its own plug holes in the bunker where the water drained away, quite simply, it was tough titty :(

OMG, that's awful. Did you get out in one?

Yes, but it just went on the bank of grass immediately in front so it travelled all of 1 yard along with a huge lump of sodden sand so it still cost me a shot as such and I couldn't clean it either and it was smothered, a real wrist breaker :(

I've had a couple like this over the wet months, I now really concentrate on keeping fairway bunkers out of my achievable distance, bloody work of the devil they are at my place!

Nightmare:( Would taking an unplayable have been an option. I could have done that a few weeks ago but forgot and ruined the hole.

Depending on the previous weather you might have been able to claim a free drop stating it was storm damage. Not on if it was just casual water but might be relevant after a real downpour that has altered the state of the bunker.

That is not the case. It is not for the individual player to decide that he can take free relief from damaged ground anywhere on the course. It has to be marked or otherwise defined as GUR.
