Mr Average

Great link. We should remember these figures before beating ourselves up every time a drive doesn't go down the middle or a putt doesn't drop in one.

"Driving distances.......
The shortest hitter was Siddikur Rahman, who averages just 260.1 yards. Despite that, the Bangladeshi managed to finish runner-up at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in May.

Scrambling Percentages.....
Short-hitting Siddikur Rahman led the way in the season-long standings, saving par 117 times from 165 missed greens for a scrambling percentage of 70.9. Only 22 players average better than 60 per cent".

Proof, if ever it was needed, that distance isn't everything and that practicing your short game is.

Must suck to be the best at your club, county, play for your country, be tipped to be the best, then you read this list and realise you are not quite as good as Mr Average..

really, one unheard of performance from a guy in one of the poorer field comps which he didnt even win

In 2016, only Henrik Stenson and Francesco Molinari hit more than 3 out of 4 fairways on average. Both finished first and second in Scoring Average.

Seems like driving the ball straight seems to be worth practising to me

Exactly what I was thinking. The scrambling percentage is amazing, wish i could get anywhere near that lol

its the complete opposite.

Perhaps we need also to remember that mostly we play shorter courses than the tour players so our average driving distances can be shorter and length isn't everything. Personally I think the approach shot to the green is the most crucial shot, the short game is very important but the nearer to the green will make the short game and putting easier

Putting is not everything, chipping is not everything, driving is not everything, sand play is not everything..

But if you are a good putter, good chipper, long hitter, good bunker player you are a good golfer!

The 260 yard stat to me says, despite being amazing at other aspects of his game, his lack of length prevented him from winning

Nah, it was because he hit his tee shot OOB on the 16th on Sunday afternoon when still leading the field ;)

But then I've done the same on that hole! :smirk: (except for the leading the field bit)

One of the areas that amateurs struggle with the most compared to pros is in greenside bunkers.
Perhaps the state of bunkers might have something to do with that. I don't know about the lower ranking tours, but when I see golf on the TV it looks to me that the pros never have to try to play out of bunkers in the state we have to contend with on a regular basis.

If every bunker I went in had perfect sand and I knew my wedge wasn't going to just bounce off a rock hard surface or dig into wet sludge, I think I might improve my own sand save average (or should that be "boilerplate/mud[delete as applicable] save average"?)

The pros do get it easy in terms of consistency of the surface they play off, i remember the first time i played at Gleneagles, 1st tee at the Kings course was like a billiard table, i remember saying to my old man, no wonder the pros score so well how can you hit a bad shot of this surface! Then nailed my drive into a massive bunker, flipped out to the wrong tier and 3 putted..
