The Golf Channel reported a few days back that the European Ryder cup committee where looking for a big name to captain the European team now that the legend that is Tom Watson has taken the captians role for the USA.Its reported that Monty's name has been thrown back into the captains position for 2014 but Monty himself has been quoted as saying not so long ago that the days of multiple captiancy for the European Ryder cup team were over.I cant help but think that if he was offered the captains role in 2014 up against Tom........Monty v Watson bring it on :thup:

Not for me.
It seems as you say its a one tournament process at the moment.
In fact i like the change every year format,all the captains seem to have a story
behind them.

I hope it's not Monty. You can't argue with his ryder cup record as a player or captain, and his playing record generally wasn't too shabby. :D

He has started to annoy me with his constant references to how he won the ryder cup at Celtic Manor. Everytime there is a microphone around he mentions it !! he's become a proper self congratulatory bore. No mention of the players. he won it all by himself!

he's got a touch of the 'woodward' syndrome !

Monty's constant reference's to his past triumphs has started to get a bit irritating of late,but he's still a millions miles behind Faldo when it comes to praising himself.
If you think Monty's self praise is bad in interviews and commentary,i wouldn't recommend you read his autobiography.

After the "great escape" this year I'd offer Jose Maria the job again. Monty would be an inspiration at Gleneagles, Paul Lawrie tweeted a couple of months back that Darren Clarke already had the job. I'd rather McGinley. I suspect he'd be a bit more professional about it!

What about Sam Torrance ?
Him and Watson have some history following the autograph incident at the Belfry.Bit of needle would certainly spice it up.
I'd like to see Torrance captain the European side,as for the autograph incident no issues there, this was recently published in The Daily Record;

"Gallacher fondly remembers having Watson as his opposite number in 1993 at The Belfry. And he has set the record straight about one story that blotted Watson’s nice-guy image.

Sam Torrance was unhappy Watson refused to sign an autograph at the post-event dinner. But the American’s apparent rudeness was actually a show of respect – to TV star Bruce Forsyth!

Gallacher said: “Bruce was doing his act to entertain everyone after dinner when Sam slipped his programme across the table and asked Tom to sign it.

“But Tom, mindful of the fact there were 400 people at this dinner, worried that if he was seen signing one autograph it might convince others to come and ask too.

“So he said ‘If you don’t mind I’ll do it later’ and Sam was a bit put out. The next day Tom apologised to Sam who in turn said, ‘Actually you were right.’

“Still, it was a nice touch and just shows the measure of the guy.”

I would like to see Torrance get the nod,as for the autograph incident all seems to be resolved according to The Daily Record recently;

Tom Watson refuses to sign Sam Torrance's programme at the pre-match Gala Dinner

Sam Torrance has enjoyed the best moments of his Ryder Cup career, both as a player and a captain, at the Belfry, the golf resort in Sutton Coldfield near Birmingham. The events of 15 years ago, however, are among the Scot's least cherished memories of the biennial match.

Like most of his compatriots, Torrance was an admirer of Tom Watson, the champion from Kansas who specialised in winning Opens in Scotland. At the Gala Dinner attended by both teams, Torrance rose from his seat at the end of the meal, picked up a programme and, in a gesture of camaraderie, walked over to ask the American captain for his autograph.

To his astonishment, Watson refused. The American said he didn't want his players bothered by autograph-hunters and if he made an exception for Torrance, then they would have to sign programmes for everyone in the room. Both embarrassed and angry, the Scot walked away empty-handed.

The slight produced a diplomatic storm which both Torrance and Bernard Gallacher, the European captain, felt obliged to play down. Later, Torrance would admit Watson was totally out of order, particularly since the American was on record in 1977 saying he felt an autographed menu was a cherished souvenir for the players.

oooooo! didn't know that happened, surprised Torrance didn't have a few choice words to say at the time. I never knew Watson was capable of behaviour like that. I always thought of him as the perfect gentleman. That is outrageous.
