My course is about 5 miles away (10 minutes in the car) but I would happily travel upto 30 minutes away if it was a good quality club and met my needs. As for format, I'll happily play anything. Stableford is favourite as it gives everyone in the roll up (including thehigher handicaps) more chance to enjoy their game without worrying if it goes wrong. We have enough medals in the season to enjoy that particular delicacy. We'll always have a mtch amongst the 4 (better ball but no concessions) to keep it interesting

Live 12 minutes away from home course and witin 40 minutes driving have choice of around 15 to 20 courses.
I believe we have the most courses per capita in the world.

Has to be Medal, every shot counts sorts the men from the boys :D

Re: Monthly poll time - how far for a round & favourite formats...

Wouldn't travel far - my course is only half a mile away. Favourite format - getting the ball in the hole in the least number of strokes.

I play at 2 different clubs , one is fairly close to my home (about 8 miles) and I play there in comps about 2-3 times a mth. The other course is close to work but about 14 miles.

I like competing in medals, for me its the best way to measure progress.
I like the odd fourball better ball team game as well.

My home course is about 35 miles away but it's via motorway so bout 30mins on a good day, I prefer stroke play, really like a Texas scramble but for me I really like playing 4 ball better ball matchplay for the spice of competition.

I will typically travel 10- 20 miles for my usual game but am prepared to travel much more.

As for format, the only one I don't like is Texas Scramble. I want to play my own ball all the time. It is a bit artificial really if you split it with others.

My club is about 8 miles from my house, but I will go further afield for the odd round. I wouldn't join a club more than about 30 mins away, as there would be too much travelling involved especially in the summer when I can be at the club pretty much every day!

Favourite format is probably plain old vanilla strokeplay. I like stableford, but I find that I like the pressure of knowing that if you stuff it in the lake it could wreck your whole comp rather than one hole. Sadist perhaps....

About 8 miles for me, and if we're talking competition format it has to be a medal as every shot is important. It's the acid test of your ability to play to handicap.

When we're playing friendly stuff I like 4BBB matchplay, but we play all sorts of formats. The most interesting is an Australian stableford, when you play as a group and multiply out your points on each hole.

Bit of a bugger if three of you have a 4-pointer and player number 4 has a blob!
