Just watching the PGA on Sky and up pops Jim Furyks seasons earnings - $3.1 million!!

Pointed it out to the Wife and she's now having a bit of a rant.

"It doesn't seem right", says she. "All the training and hard work that Doctors and nurses have to go through, and these Golfers lead such a privileged life style. And the footballers, half of them can't string a sentence together".

Have to say that she is not against Golfers, just the difference in earnings seems so unfair, compared to what they do in life.

Can't argue with that really eh?
 
There was something that got posted on the net a while ago about sportspersons (it focussed specifically on footballers) that, really explained how the amounts that get paid really are justified. I'll try to dig it out, but it was a while ago!
 
When Facebook was floated on the stock exchange a few months ago Bono's stock in facebook nearly hit the $1billion mark.
In the grand scheme of things, for everyone thats rich, There is always someone with more money. That is the world and always will be.
 
At her peak, cilla black was earning 8 mill a year for blind date. What's the difference? Sport, entertainment, all the same. It's about who puts bums on seats.

I don't get why the team players in footy get so much, or the journey men golfers. No one turns on the telly to see them play. The Henry's, rooneys, messis, ronaldos, tigers, mcilroys, seves etc, draw the crowds. They earn the money. The rest coast on coat tails, and hold earn accordingly.
 
I would of thought that Furyk earns something similar to that $3.1 million once again in sponsorship money.
I sure I once read that Woods was earning Roughly $50 million annually at his peak and 80% of that was sponsors money.
It really doesn't bother me too much, but what does is journeymen footballers who jump from club to club despite their bad reputation yet still manage to get a decent contract or players that seem to be permanently injured yet still manage to find a club that will give them a decent contract based on one good season they had five years ago.

i dont think golfers are over paid, they done well to be were they are, footballers, now thats a wage band that gets on my baps, one footballe read was earning 125k a week!!!! least the golfers of the pga etc.. go out to win it, its guranteed and i think theres a hell of a lot more skill etc.. in golf than kicking a bag of air about field, im not a big football fan im sure you gathered
 
Overpaid? Maybe, but what does the average pro earn, and from when to when? He might make the main tour in his early 20's, and he might pick up a few decent cheques a year - a season that isn't anything like a full year. He has £xxxx a year in travelling and accom costs, and caddies fees. And then by the time he's in his mid 40's he's struggling to keep his tour card.

He earns by his peformance on a weekly basis. He has a bad week and he's out of pocket, and away from home xx weeks a year. A footballer can pick up a decent wage for warming his bum on the bench playing for the reserves.

Rather than say a pro is overpaid, maybe consider a doctor and nurse is underpaid?

So do coastguard, Police, Fire Service, Paramedics etc. I'd give all emergency service workers a much enhanced salary as well as teachers. I'd also cut salaries and "benefits" of MP's, etc drastically.
 
(most) sportsperson have about 10 yrs of useful career, all their money is made in that short span. No one wants to see a 50 yr old footballer or cricketer in an international game. Golf is a bit of an exception due to the challenge tour. Dr and Nurses get to work to much later in their lives. I rather be treated by 50 yr doc who has the experience rather than 19yr old. Cant say the same about sports.
Having said that most Drs + nurses would never make £ millions.. But then no one said that the world is a fair place.
 
Whilst I don't disagree with your point about footballers and golfers being overpaid, I also think that there is a lot worse. Baseball and NFL are much worse. Alex Rodriguez signed a $252 million 10 year deal with the Texas Rangers and then another $270 million 10 year deal when he signed for the New York Yankees, and that doesn't include sponsorship, Peyton Manning earnt $42 million last year, and the year when he was out for the whole season he still took home $26 million! I do also agree with the point that the emergency services and people like doctors and nurses are underpaid. The other group who really deserve a much better salary is the army, who are way too underpaid for putting your life on the line so that others can be safe.
 
While I agree to an extent about sports people and entertainers being overpaid most doctors aren't exactly poor, have longer careers and earn more with experience and have a nice pension at the end of it seeing them to the end of their days. Nurses on the other hand is a different matter.

In the most junior hospital trainee post (Foundation Year 1) the basic starting salary is £22,412. This increases in Foundation Year 2 to £27,798. For a doctor in specialist training the basic starting salary is £29,705. The sportsmen (women) that are getting this money are the best in the world though. If there was a grading system for doctors say, where you could find a doctor that could cure anything and was guaranteed to make you live longer or something, then i'm sure he/ she would get a lot of money. It is a odd concept though
 
I guess it's all relative, for every Rory McIlroy who earns millions there's 100,000 who retire or don't make it.

Then again, for every Bill Gates there are 100,000 software programmers who don't make a multi billion pound company.

It's just the same as that right?
