Some strong views expressed at the AGM against mobile phones on the course. Some members calling for total bans and sanctions etc. I found myself wondering just what the problem is. Other than having them on silent or very quiet ringtone, as long as people use them respectfully does it make any difference on the course other than in any other public space?

If you see someone on the course using a phone, not holding you up, what's it to you? Why would you care? Is it a generational thing?

My exact thoughts, don't like to hear them going off all the time. Incidentaly daughter rang me twice today, but it was not just a hello let's chat call.

An ex pal played with some lads for the first time and his phone rang five times in three holes. It was his wife. During the last call she asked what potato she wanted on his dinner. After half a minute of any will do, a fellow playing partner said can you pass a message onto your wife. Yeah sure, " if she rings agin your phone will go in the lake and you will follow it". She never called again and they never played with him again.

No issue with others using them (aside from speaking loudly and putting people off, which I have witnessed).
But not for me. I spend 98% of the week fully contactable through work or personal mobiles. Golf is my 4-5 hour escape from the world why would I want someone breaking in to that peace?

Where do you draw the line then?

I use golfshot every round, gps and scorecard so should that also be banned?

Using it for calls, texts or social media then no I agree but a blanket ban is stupidity

Another mountain out of a molehill non issue.

Our club has no mobile ban or policy. People happily make calls if needed, check scores on web, connect to club WiFi and generally act normal.

No one bats an eyelid. there is enough room in the clubhouse that someone talking on the phone is no more annoying than anyone else sitting chatting.

You never want someone chatting the whole way through a round on the phone. That would just be rude. If your club needs a rule to stop this then it most likely has bigger problems.

Totally agree, I just don't see the problem but some seem to get very wound up just by the sight of someone on an adjacent hole using a phone. There's no rule, BTW, I only raise it because I was a bit taken aback by the strength of feeling in some quarters for what seems a non-issue to me.

You would not talk to PP while someone was playing their shot so why talk on the phone apart from that I don't have a problem.

just remember how many lives have been saved by mobile phones when someone has heart attack or some other medical problem while on a golf course so blanket ban is not on.

just put it on silent or you will be playing alone as no one will play with you.

Pretty much sums it up for me. Just be respectful of those around you. Other than that, crack on.

I have absolutely no problem with anybody carrying one on the course for "emergency" use but I get annoyed when I am playing with somebody who keeps taking business calls throughout the round despite announcing the fact that they managed to get out of the office for the afternoon.
Either they are out of the office or they're not????
I haven't come across a phone yet that doesn't tell you if you have had a missed call, switched off or not. So make the call later when you have finished.
I always take my phone with me, but leave it in the car and check it as soon as I get back to the clubhouse.

We have a lot of doctors at my club and like me people with their own businesses so sometimes a call to us is innovoidable.

I have mine on silent/vibrate and I'll glance at it if I feel it's gone off whilst walking to our balls. If I need to call that person back I'll let my pp's know and do it quickly & quietly whilst we're all walking up the fairway.

I assume you mean "While they are walking up the fairway" Robin?
;)

I have my mobile on me and use it for reading emails for work - never take calls on the course unless at the half way hut

The thing with mobile phone calls is they are rarely as quick and as quiet as you think they were.

For me you shouldn't use them for calls on a golf course with the obvious exception (expectant fathers), I can't think of many other sports were it would be acceptable either, if you are that important maybe you shouldn't be wasting your super important time playing golf.

The trouble is there is a significant minority of people who have no regard for anyone else, personally I do not think there is a need for mobiles on the course or in the clubhouse.
