mobile phones on golf course as from next year...

I find the debate on using apps to help interesting! I use golfshot and it's a great gps app and helps me be confident with yardages. The compass app does nothing to help, and the wind speed app is a new one by me? You can and I do turn off the compass app so if any funny duddy wants a go at me then I can put him in his place. As someone else said why pay ££££££££££'s on a gps/laser etc when you can buy a golfshot app for £19.99 which is better than anything else out there!

You can put the fuddy duddy in his place all you like, he'll still DQ you from the comp for using an illegal device.

if you have a need to be contacted by mobile phone then stay off the course. FFS is nowhere sacred, we all managed to play 18 without hearing a phone for bloody years they are a right pain in the *rse. 40yr olds acting like teenagers checking their phones every ten seconds in case they miss a text message of high importance. Leave the phone in the car or locker it's only 4 hours what can be so important. I say ban them from every course in the land.

My kind of comment, couldn't agree more!!

Very true, if u want to use a gps in competition then an iPhone ain't the answer.

No issues with phones on the course but only if on silent and used in emergencies only

Most phones these days take a good minute or so to boot up from being switched off which could be vital if sumone collapses.

Should someone collapse and I don't have a mobile phone in my bag I would expedite my well prepared emergency 3 point plan...

1. Ask them if they have conceeded the match
2. Make sure they were warm and comfy
3. Leave them to the foxes.

My playing partner collapsed on the course a couple of years back and a phone was handy to get the pro out with a buggy pretty quick

You are joking right?

If something happened to my daughter or my dad who has a long term illness that is infinitely more important than golf.

I don't use my phone but its on silent in my pocket every time i play.

Sometimes it really astonishes me quite how seriously people take their golf!

Is the correct answer.

these days people expect to be able to contact you within a few minutes at almost anytime, no matter what.

its now the norm, you might not like it, but that isn't anyones fault.

i check my phone every few holes i guess, never hold anyone up and have the peace of mind that nobody needs or wants anything from me while im playing.

to say it never bothered you 30 yrs ago doesnt really make a difference to today, you never had to option 30years ago, and your loved ones and friends never expected to be able to contact you inside a few minutes before.

so nomatter how important golf is to you, i would be embarrassed for any of my friends or family to ever think it meant more to me than them. some of you folks obviously take this all very seriously.

If everyone had a touch of common sense then it wouldn't even be an issue,

There's always going to be a Dom Joly on the course shouting into their phones that they're on the golf course and that the signals crap...

But I'm also hoping lots of golfers get iPhones for Christmas as I am soon going to be helping my friend Promote his new GPS Charger Adaptor..

He ran out of battery using his iPhone app & decided to build an adaptor to charge it from his trolley.... How's that for taking golf seriously

I guess it depends on what you value from the game, and how you have embraced technology. Personally I love the escapism from life every time I step on the course, all the days worries disappear and I am allowed to be ME, not at anyones beck and call, and not available to anyone else but my playing buddy. If I could not afford the luxury of 100% ME time, then a mobile and communication to the outside world would be vitally important to me, providing it did not effect anyone else on the course. If a club, decides to ban mobiles, then some members will abide, some members will ignore the rule, and some will leave. However as the discussion has obviously shown, feeling is quite strong on this subject. So, I would also expect the club to attract members as well knowing that whatever happened their round would never be spoiled by a mobile. Especially if mobile interuptions on the course got more frequent, and more annoying.

A lot of interesting comments. I think for the guy with an ill daughter I can 100 see how he gets the piece of mind he needs having his phone on him but can still go out and have a game of golf. Of course. there are those that are born worriers (what if...) and to be honest if its going to happen having your mobile won't stop it.

I do happen to subscribe to the group that says having at least one per group is a good thing although ideally off. I've known two guys die from heart attacks on the course (and they weren't even under the pressure of partnering me) and although in both cases help was summoned immediately via mobile they were DOA despite the best efforts of our trained first aiders who were buggied straight out with a defribiliator.

I can see where clubs are coming from via the DMD aspect but it seems a draconian measure to ban everyone from having a phone to catch maybe a handful of cheats using them in a club stableford. It's hardly the Open and whilst I'm all for everyone playing by the rules surely tackling illegal drops, lateral hazards and slow play are more important

I have had to have a phone on the course before due to work, or I would not have been able to play. Simple as that. As long as they are on silent and people are not holding up the course checking facebook and e-mails what is the problem? If you need to use it at the clubhouse go outside with it.

??? why are you playing golf whilst working????

??? why are you playing golf whilst working????

Had it earlier in the year. I am an Aircraft Technician in the RAF. I was sent home and put on standby to go to Italy for the Libyan conflict. I had to be at my base within 2 hours of being contacted. It took 3 days until the call came through. So without a phone I could not have gone for a game of golf and would have just sat at home watching TV. Because I had my phone I could simple as that.

What do want people to do when they are on call? Sit at home watching Jeremy Kyle? On the very odd occasion that i'm on call, I go to the gym, or the football, or shopping with the Missus.. Sometimes I even play golf (usually on my own as I don't want to ruin someone elses round if I have to leave.....)

My point exactly. Some people need to have their phone just in case. There is a heart surgeon that plays at my course and he has his phone with him at all times just in case he is needed.
