mobile phones on golf course as from next year...

Not sure it would be fair or practical to totally ban phones altogether?
Fair enough to put them on silent & maybe not use any of the apps?
But, we all have family at home, what if they need to get hold of you in an emergency?
Or what if someone is taken ill on the course?

i thought it was common practice not to have phones on when out on the course,at my club we can only use them on the car park, you can set them to silent if your in the club house but must leave to use it,and lets be honest how would you feel if you were standing over a put and a playing partners phone blurted out a comedy ring tone, different standards for different clubs i guess

You don't need a club rule to have the decency to put your phone on silent if you are taking it out with you.

For the first time I took my phone on the course today (forgot it was in my inside pocket in my jacket). Well I was pitching on to the green from 100 yards, just on the down swing when the phone rang and vibrated in my pocket. Scared the hell out of me, the ball went 100 yards but at a 45 degree angle to the green. Bloody phone. Thankfully happened to me and not when my mate was playing, he meanwhile was nearly wetting himself taking the mick.

The same at my place

if you have a need to be contacted by mobile phone then stay off the course. FFS is nowhere sacred, we all managed to play 18 without hearing a phone for bloody years they are a right pain in the *rse. 40yr olds acting like teenagers checking their phones every ten seconds in case they miss a text message of high importance. Leave the phone in the car or locker it's only 4 hours what can be so important. I say ban them from every course in the land.

my phone goes on silent and stays in the bag, if working standby its on silent but in my pocket(on vibrate). the course is a place to get away from things and chillax.

I keep a mobile switched off in the bag in case there is a medical emergency or something like that. I can see the need if you are a transplant surgeon or a secret agent on 24hour call, but most of the people who use them on the course have no need to do so.

Still, played in the US last week, and we caught up a group ahead. They were playing death metal reasonably loudly from an iPod/speaker system on their cart.

I have a phone on silent in the bag or in my pocket. With a very young family and senior parents it's a comfort that I can be reached quickly and not half a day later.

In my club only the Captain can use a phone on the course but he must have it in Flight mode if he pushes through on the first Tee.

You are joking right?

If something happened to my daughter or my dad who has a long term illness that is infinitely more important than golf.

I don't use my phone but its on silent in my pocket every time i play.

Sometimes it really astonishes me quite how seriously people take their golf!

Don't have an issue with anyone taking a mobile out as long as its on silent when you are on the course. By all means check it between holes if you have a need (not the bloody racing reults though) but just don't hold anyone up. I can't see how a club can enforce a ban or D/Q you as it doesn't break any rule of golf. What are they going to do, check your bag as you pick up your card in the pro shop and frisk you as you approach the first tee. Unmanageable and a load of old tosh

are all clubs not allowing mobile phones on the course?

my course has stated that anyone using a phone or having a phone during comps will be disqualified

Seems that the club are making sure that competitors in their comps are abiding by the R and A rules in relation to mobile phones that have the capacity to measure anything other than distance. Possibly a bit over the top by banning all phones but maybe this was a mis-interpretation by the OP (and respondents to the post).

I have two daughters and my wife who are damn more important than golf. If there was an emergency I would want to know. My phone is always on silent and either in my bag or in my pocket as I normally use it to record my scores and stats. It's not like I'm ringing people or taking calls every couple of minutes!! I do agree that people who do use their phone in such a manner are just being disrespectful.

I've absolutely no problem with mobiles on the course as long as they're kept on silent and for emergencies only.

NB Facebook, Twitter and texts from the mates are not emergencies !!

We used to manage without penicillin too, as well as TV, Indoor plumbing, Electrickery, Central heating.;).. My phone stays on silent and in my back pocket. My family know that they can contact me in an emergency (that is a good thing by the way). My work phone stays in the car and is checked when I come out of the clubhouse... Its not the phone thats the problem, it's the pillocks who use them all the time without good reason...

Your last sentence nails it for me.
