My mum has given me her old phone. I trandferred my sim card over and it says SIM network locked.

What does this mean?

It means that the service provider allocated the phone as a contract to your mum that limited the networks accessible to theirs. You can take it to some retailers who can UNBLOCK it and open it to any network. It hould cost about £5-£10.
