Hi, Im looking to get a new set of irons for about £200 and ive seen that Direct Golf is selling the Mizuno MX-17 and the MacGregor Mactec M685 irons for £199. Ive done a fair bit of research and both get very good reviews and seem like bargains but which one would be best for me?

Im have a hadicap in the mid to low 20's and have re taken up golf after a good few years out, my current irons are Memphis ones from years ago bought in TJ Hughes so am after something better to push on and improve my game.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Id say it was impossible to say, everyone is different. The only way you could possibly know is to have a good hit with both sets and judge from there. when i bought my new irons i tried them over a couple of weeks just to be sure.I think its important not to worry about how long it takes and how many times you go and test them out. Afterall you will probably have them for some time so be sure they are exactly what you want.:)

You have the same dilema I had around this time last year.

I was looking to upgrade my irons and couldn't choose between the Mizzy's and the Macs.

Went to AG and had a swing with both sets. Couldn't split them to be honest. I did however (as my sig will testify) go for the Mizunos, purely because I liked the look of them at address over the Macgregors.
What I did notice with the Mizunos when I took them out to play was the high ball flight I was achieving over my old set. Sometimes I lost distance due to the high flight, but not too much to be strongly noticeable.

I'm afraid it's down to the individual and how the clubs feel in your hands.
Pop into DG and ask to have a swing. They're usually pretty accomodating and let you try before you buy.

The only downside I've found with the MX-17's is the SW as it's cavity backed and somehow doesn't feel right in the bunkers.(My opinion) Easily rectified as I put my old bladed SW back into the bag.

Same old answer I'm afraid. Go somewhere like and AG or Direct Golf and try as many sets as you can. Try graphite and steel and see if that has any effect on your swing. If possible try and go onto a proper range so you can judge distance and watch the ball flight without relying on computer readouts.

I know you have two makes in mind but go in open minded and don't be pressurised into buying brand X because of any salesman or one off promotions. I went to an AG a few months back and all the guy wanted to get me to keep trying was a set of Nicklaus which was suitable for a 20+ handicapper and not what I was after at all. Suffice to say that sotre didn't get my business and I made sure I told the manager why

I hear what you're saying Homer.

Jack Nicklaus seems to be the bread and butter gear on sale at AG.
Walk into any DG store and you will almost definitely be offered John Letters gear amongst others when looking for new irons etc.

Are the MacGregors a forged club? (like my 565)
If so....there's no competition....

I love my irons....sweeter than a sweet thing smeared in honey....

DG stock "old-season" MacGregor gear and have no choice but to flog it for silly money, as they don't have the cache of Mizuno or Cally or Ping.

I had some CAST T-zoid clubs, bought custom fitted and everything......they are not close to the forged MacGregors in any catagory.....

I'm totally biased, of course, but did I do the right thing to get a discount set of unloved MacGregors or bottom of the range Mizuno? NO....

Now, if you were talking forged MP series, I'd go with the crowd and say, choose for yourself.

I'll second rguk, got my 565's at about the same time (different DG), and I tried 3 or 4 other sets including Mizuno at the time.

The fact that they were end of range at the time doesn't mean that they suddenly became bad clubs.
