Measuring before a drop

If I am dropping ball back as far as I wish from a water hazard is it OK to use a DMD to check the distance before I drop?
i.e I want a 75yd shot so check with DMD first that I am at 75yds then drop?

if DMDs are permitted in the comp then it's fine (and common) to do this.
