do you think that being that many shots clear mclroy will treat it as matchplay against yang or just keep playing his own game, obviously if he just concentrates on beating yang someone from further back could catch them both, but being that many shots clear cant see that happening , also now his caddie starts to earn his money just hope they have both learned lessons from the masters, although judging by the way he played 18 yesterday they haven't,

Re: thought process

I think he said in his interview that he wants to keep on making birdies to get as far ahead as possible.

fair play to him if thats how he,s playing it, its been great to watch him so far, just hope he decides when to go for it and when not to a bit better

Re: thought process

Might be being a tad unfair about the second to 18. He said afterwards he was aiming right but the club turned over in the grass. So thinking was correct just the execution wasn't spot on. I think he was only hitting a mid iron so not as if it was some crazy hero shot.

I think he'll just carry on like he is. Why shouldn't he as long as it's working. Probably playing well because he is playing freely. He's nailing his tee shots and striking his irons so sweetly so why wouldn't he be trying for birdies?

If he starts getting too defensive it might not pay off. If Yang or anyone else can keep in touch and there's only 2 or 3 in it on the back 9 on Sunday then a more conservative strategy might be called for. I really hope his game and his nerve stand up.

Going to be a great weekend. This is what the Majors are all about.

fair shout, but surely he should have played it extra safe and totally taken the water out of play anything short of the green would have done, just hope the 2 shots he dropped wont come back to haunt him,he wouldnt have played that shot with a 2 shot lead on sunday

Re: thought process

I can see where you're coming from and maybe in hindsight he'd have played it differently. I hope he's learned something from it (that area left of the green slopes wickedly down to the water) and as you say won't playing it like that on Sunday if he only needs a 5 to win. However he is still 6 shots ahead with a long way to go and if he loses it from here I don't think we could blame that shot. It'll be because something else has happened.

Re: thought process

hope he does it, the crowds seem to be behind him, beers are in the fridge got the tv booked for later, sit back and enjoy :D

I think the 18th was just one of those things. Can't help but be impressed by his reaction to Augusta .... comes out in the next major and plays 2 rounds of virtually flawless golf. The kid's got some real steel in there.

I think he's going to win this by 3/4 clear shots.

Re: thought process

He has shown the course is there for the taking by attacking, all the commentators are saying how hard the course is playing ,and its proving so for the others.
He said he was going to play aggressive at the easy pins,so why change, imo

Re: thought process

He'll finsih something like 14 under and no-one will get anywhere near him. He's playing too well to mess it up. So what if he has a couple of bad holes it wont be enough to cost him the title.

Thats pretty much how i see it.He's an aggressive player, and plays his best golf when he's attacking the course.I honestly think he tried to protect his lead on the last day of the masters, and should have kept looking for birdies.
Lets hope he keeps doing what he did for the first 35 holes of this US Open.

Re: thought process

I think it was Butch Harmon that said the winner, for once, wouldn't necessarily be the best putter over the weekend (to the delight of a Mr T. Golfy :D)

I tend to agree, as anything wayward is being severely punished. It all depends on the pins really, and whether they are attackable or not.

Mcilroy has been head and shoulders above everyone else so far though. I suspect that the Masters is the best thing ever to have happened to him. Woods could learn a helluva lot listening to RM speaking. I've been so impressed with his attitude to it all, and it really looks like he's used the experience as a massive learning curve.

As long as he keeps it straight i can't see past him. I can't see anyone shooting a 65, apart from RM himself
