Why should he be disqualified and not a 2 shot penalty please?

He would have been DQ'd because he didnt call a penalty on himself which would have meant he signed for the wrong score. Luckily for the wee man he dodged a bullet on this one and wasn't disqualified.

I saw that too and you're correct, he definately grounded his club before he hit the ball, if i remember correctly the commentators were speaking about this exact scenario only about 5 mins prior to Raymond doing it.....yet neither of the commentators said anything?!?!
As for Rory, i'm glad he's still in, yes he was a bit petulant in kicking the sand but can you blame him? 5 dropped shots in the last 3 holes would make me do more than slightly kick the sand....i'd have stoved someone's head in

What about Harrington? I'd be fuming if I was him.He addressed the ball, felt the wind and moved back, he then went to re-address the ball, did not ground his putter and the ball moved.No way in my mind was that a penalty, he had not addressed the ball or presented his putter.

He had addressed it though, thats the problem and from all the tv angles you could see last night none of them were conclusive enough.
Its crap that he got a penalty in the way that he did i agree, but from the best angle i saw last night, he addressed the ball, grounded his putter and then moved away which is a penalty.
That said, it wasn't warranted as there is no way Pod caused the ball to move, fair play to him in the spirit in which he took it though!

Is the issue that the ball has to move whilst your addressing it though? He had not grounded his club or set himslef when it moved.

I believe (i may be wrong) that if the ball moves at all once it has been addressed, whether the player moves away or not it is a penalty as the ball is deemed to have been caused to move by the player addressing it.
Regardless, its a crap penalty that shouldnt have been enforced on him under the circumstances in my opinion!

In these cases, I think it would benefit those players who dont ground there club before a putt. Not many I know, but I have played with some who dont ground the putter behind the ball to ensure a smooth take away.
Paddy had defo addressed the ball though, doesn't matter that he had moved away, the ball was addressed. Very harsh but he took it well as stated, and did well to hole it.
On a similar note, what is the ruling if you tee the ball up and knock it off with the driver (we've all done it)

11-3. Ball Falling off Tee
If a ball, when not in play, falls off a tee or is knocked off a tee by the player in addressing it, it may be re-teed, without penalty. However, if a stroke is made at the ball in these circumstances, whether the ball is moving or not, the stroke counts, but there is no penalty.

I'm glad you confirmed what I saw. I can't believe it was missed by both the commentators and officials.
I know he wasn't in the running to make the cut, but it was still an infringement.

I don't think he was going to be disqualified for the incident. My understanding was if he was awarded a penalty he wouldn't have made the cut.

Cannot understand why Rory hasn't been DQ'd and Paddy was correct to be penalised.

I agree (sorry Rory). I've watched it four times and to me it looks 90% like a move made in frustration and 10% something else....what I don't know.
I think he's got off very lightly, rules or no rules, if you interfere with the sand in any way after *leaving your ball in the bunker* something's not right....if I messed up a bunker shot, I wouldn't be smoothing anything, raking, or indeed touching the sand with anything other than my shoes....looks a difficult choice, but on balance, I agree with not DQ-ing....

They DQ'd a guy last season in a PGA event who hit out of one bunker, smoothed the sand with his feet before he realised his ball had gone into another bunker further up the fairway. He was deemed to have tested the lie and DQ'd. Pretty harsh but that's the rules.

That was Stewart Cink, whses caddy raked the fairway bunker,at least the R&A amended the rule within a few days.
Theres no penalty now for raking a bunker if your ball goes into another bunker.

Harrington had addressed the ball and even stepping away wouldn't save him. The only way he could have avoided the penalty would have been to have marked, replaced the ball and started again.
I have to say given the fact that others historically have been D/Q'd for the same offence McIlroy is very, very lucky and I can't help feeling some of that is to do with him being the new kid on the block. If it had been a journeyman pro I reckon they would have invoked the penalty.

Where there is a way of manipulating the outcome of a ruling there will always be a degree of Golf Politics. Its wrong in my view but at the same time I cant say Im disappointed that Rory made it!

Rory is a very lucky lad imo. And it'll be a valuble lesson learned for a very narrow escape.
btw he probably should have been DQ'd though that's the last thing I'd have liked to have seen. I'm very glad he's still in the Masters.
