Just got home and turned on the Masters coverage and I see there's a lot of debate about whether or not McIlroy is going to be penalised for apparently kicking the sand in the greenside bunker on the 18th after leaving his first shot in there. Torrance is convinced that that will be considered to be 'testing the sand' and thus will deserve a penalty. I think that's outrageous, personally! Surely he couldn't learn anything from that kick that he didn't already know from taking his stance?? I can only hope that common sense prevails, especially as a penalty at this stage would mean him missing the cut.

I tend to agree Muttlee, It'll be a shame if he's not there for the weekend. I've got a feeling it won't be good for him, as rules are rules - and with the whole world watching!
One things for sure, he'll learn from it and won't do it again.

Golfmmad.

A mistake borne of frustration, inexperience showing.

Sorry boys but you can't do that in a bunker no matter how inoccuous, end of. There is no debate, its a straight DQ in my book.

Tough on the lad but that's the rules and Rory knows he made an error.

Its DQ, I felt gutted the moment I saw him do it, just have to wait and see what the official judgement is? The only way I can see him get away with it is if they deem that he had already had one shot and so he would be fully aware of the bunker quality and would gain nothing by kicking the sand that he didnt already know from the first bunker shot.
But i think sadly he might be DQ.

But there have been cases where rules were broken but the officials were lenient. There was a well known case where Bobby Locke replaced a ball in the wrong place and holed out from there on the final green of the 1957 Open. (He'd had to move his ball marker because it was in someone else's line.) Locke won the tournament by 3 shots and could have been disqualified for a clear breach of the rules, but because the 2 shot penalty wouldn't have changed the result, he wasn't penalised. (See the 1957 entry on this page for the full details.)

Hopefully the officials will take the same attitude with Rory.

He failed to get out of the bunker and then inadvertently 'tested' the sand with his foot even though we know he was just smoothing the sand.

I can't see any reprieve.

They DQ'd a guy last season in a PGA event who hit out of one bunker, smoothed the sand with his feet before he realised his ball had gone into another bunker further up the fairway. He was deemed to have tested the lie and DQ'd. Pretty harsh but that's the rules.

Another possible rules infringement???

I was watching the coverage of Amen Corner last night, prior to live coverage kicking in at 9.00pm.
Raymond Floyd played into 11 and his ball either spun off the green or came up short and rolled down the front bank. Now he wasn't in the actual water, but was in the water hazard as defined by the lines and I'm absolutely certain he grounded his club just prior to chipping onto the green. Camera showed a close up of his shot and I would put money on it.

Missed the Rory incident but I must say, based on the what I know, a D/Q would have made me feel a little peed off. Sorry if anyone disagrees but kicking the sand????

What does everyone do when they get in a bunker? Dig their feet in and wiggle them about? Surely that's testing the sand as much as a kick?

Yes ok if he had whacked the sand with his club in frustration it would be a no brainer but come on?
