Maybe length isn't everything after all!

Distance is not everything
Money is not everything

Easy to say when you have it, harder to appreciate the struggle when you do not

My distance with my 8 iron is about 155 yards but I play off 18 and regularly get beaten by people who are much shorter than me because they a) hit the fairway off the tee. b) manage the course better. c) have a great short game. d) can putt. Distance is good but a good player will beat a "long" hitter most times.

155 with an 8 iron and you use x100 in your irons. Doesn't seem quite right? Was you fitted?

The people who claim that length isn't everything are always the ones who are long enough to reach a GIR on a par4 with driver/short iron anyway and can go for most par5s in two :). I struggle to reach most par4s in three and in that case more length definitely would be a great help. It's kind of frustrating when you are both 120 yards out and your pp is like "Oh, I think I'm gonna take a bit off my wedge" and you are: "Oh, I think I'll hit my hybrid and give it all I've got."

I agree , i thought hit my drives well today but I still needed to use my 3 wood on 10 occasions for my 2nd shots.:(:o

True, but the advantages of distance shouldn't be underestimated.

One of the guys I play with is 6 shots higher than me, but there's no way I'm 6 shots better than him club for club as a golfer. Maybe 2 or 3 shots, but the rest is because he's hitting a fairway wood or hybrid into greens when I'm hitting 7 or 8 iron.

That's one thing that's helped me a bit is keeping a nice smooth swing slower on my back swing and don't try thrashing the ball I used to try and hammer it every full shot but learnt to control it a bit yes im shorter but plenty long enough for my game and far more control .

I got well beaten in a match yesterday by a guy who was even shorter off the tee than me, The difference was that he was deadly from 100 yards in, never taking more than 3 to get down, whereas I was struggling a bit with my short game on the day. :(

I wouldn't class taking no more than 3 to get down from inside 100 yds as "deadly"

I have been worrying about my distance, my 8 iron is labelled up at 150 but this year I am at 140.. So far. I think I am not driving through the ball. I am going to have to go to the range and have a little look. I don't know about my driver, I try to put it in the right place to give myself a chance.

I was indeed fitted, by a Titleist advanced fitting centre. Was advised to go with x100's for a more penetrating flight. We did the numbers on trackman and these were the best shaft for me. As Lump says it was a flight thing.

Getting down in 2 from 100 yards is deadly - getting down in three is normal and expected for most

Not for me it isn't! I quite often take four or even five to get down. I am basically a high single figure golfer with a 28 handicap chipping game. Actually that is unfair on 28 handicappers, who often chip better than I can. I am not a bad putter though, and if I can, I putt from off the green to avoid having to chip. I don't know why I find chipping so difficult, because it should be the easiest shot in the book, but I seem to chunk them, thin them, and even shank them! :(

From a hundred yards you should be looking to be on the green 8/10 times. If not the issue isn't your chipping it's your approach play from 100 yards

I'm OK at pitching in from down to about 40 yards with a half wedge shot. It's when I just miss the green by a few yards when I have problems. The match described in the original postings was played on a course with rather small greens, so I had to chip more often than normal.
