I played today and my mindset was completely different. I've been working on my wedges and my chipping so it was those shots I was most concerned about. I didn't putt that well and my driver was a bit hit and miss but I wasn't that fussed. Hit a couple of partial wedge swings and they were right on the money and my chipping was giving me lots of one putt chances.

It's weird because before Christmas I would have looked at my score and been disappointed but instead I feel much more philosophical and am pleased to see progress on the specific areas I'm working on. Medal next week here's hoping I have a good round.

How's everyone else's early season progress looking?

PS chipping tips in golf monthly this month awesome. Always chipped square opening stance made such a big difference!

I'm playing really well at the moment just can't putt, feel like Lee Westwood!

Went round today in 73 gross (par 72, SSS 71) and I was playing superbly in pretty tough conditions with a 15-20mph wind.

Driver straight and long, irons were great, wedges and chipping good aswell.

The longest putt I holed all day must have been a foot tap in.

I'm pleased because I played, and have been playing, well. Just can't putt. Slightly annoying.

I think it's important to get into your head that a bad score doesn't always come from playing badly, and a good score doesn't always come from playing well.
I feel my game is coming together nicely. A gross 75 yesterday was my best of the year so far.10 fairways hit, 10 GIR, 29 putts and 3 birdies...
Driving was especially pleasing - 10 from 12 fairways and only just in the first cut on those missed.
Still a couple of loose shots, silly ones and a dodgy putt but pretty solid.
Not unhappy with where things are at the moment.

havent had a chance to play yet, hoping to join a club soon, but your right ,my attitude changed and play like each shot doesnt matter, still trying my heart out,but scores and enjoyment much better.

My problem at the moment is managing to bring it all together. When it finally happens I may manage to make a yearly target

I'll be reading those chipping tips!! Hit the ball great, only played 15 in a swindle but was 7 over, was next to the green in 2 on the 3 par 5's but failed to get it up and down each time.

I had been playing quite well up until yesterday but had some serious alignment issues which killed my score and left me feeling pretty dejected. Everything was left and I was really struggling with my ball striking. Played again today and whilst there was plenty of garbage on the front 9, I managed to sort myself out and par 4 of the last 6 holes. I have spent most of my practice time on my putting and I can honestly say today ranks as one of my best rounds with the short stick. A total of 29 putts, including a number of tricky long ones and 3 lip outs. If I can get my swing settled and maintain my current putting form I'll be a very happy chappy!

Not much to keep the glass half full Homer happy. Too many swings with the old technique and couldn't get the new swing working. Couldn't chip although with my history thats no surprise and couldn't find a fairway. I did birdie the 4th and hit a great tee shot at 16 but other than that very disappointing. I agree that sometimes you can swing well and not score and nobble it round and break your handicap. I wasn't too worried about my score as it was just a roll up but I'm more annoyed I couldn't replicate what I've been doing at the range

Good attitude, a lot more should adopt it.

The next time you see a chipping tip in a magazine it will have you standing square again. Wasn't it not so long ago there was a tip in saying stand square?

Played this morning and we played stableford - shot 37 points with 2 blobs and a single hole with 1 point.

3 putted our 15th and shanked a ball into the ditch in our 9th for the 2 blobs. Apart from those two incidents was very happy with the driving, chipping and mostly the irons.

Have struggled for months to get decent strike on the irons, think the firmer fairways helped alot.

Got our first comp coming up in a few weeks so gearing up nicely to attack the handicap!

Cheers JustOne.Putting is killing me though, there's not a stack and tilt putting approach is there..... ;)

Funnily enough.........................:mad: ..........there are quite a lot of people who putt with more weight on the left foot, I wouldn't say it's common but apparently it can help. There's a few on Tour who do it but can't think of names right now.

That said, If you're shooting 73 I reckon your putting is spot on. Chances are you're just not as close with your approaches as you'd like to be.. or your chips aren't quite dead. Winter footprinted greens don't help neither.

Hi Region don't worry by good round I mean I hope the bits I'm working on stay steady. Ive changed my definition of good round now to reflect that. But we'll see what happens. Not expecting to shoot the lights out ;)

As for magazine tips you are spot on. For two years I cut out and kept magazine tips and there is almost a 50/50 split but I'm not for changing as this method is working really well for me.

This year is really about accepting my limitations, not expecting miracles and working really hard on specific parts of my game. Hopefully it will reflect in incremental improvements in my scoring.

Ditto - been through the very same thing and have now decided that the way I swng a club - is the way I swing a club. I have been fighting off the tee for two years with a fadeyslice and couldnt get up and down a set of bunk beds near the green. 3 lessons with the pro over the last year, a change on Friday to Calloways new Razr fit driver (the messiah!) and a lot of work back end of last season with callaways x jaws wedges has made a hell of a difference; returning 81 and 82 gross on Friday and Saturday, returning the confidence and self befief again which must be 90% of the game? I am now really looking forward to the start of the new season - able to compete.
