We bought a new bed last year and got the mattress from Costco... It's a silent-night so is good quality, however - i think it is too hard and is causing me restless nights and not helping with a current muscle injury i have to my neck.

Has anyone else ever bought a new mattress and not liked it - for what reason - and did you replace then have better sleep and less injuries etc etc.

Would be interesting to know before i begin looking for another mattress.

Also, does anyone have one of these memory foam mattress toppers? Do they work?

could be the pillows doing your neck in. I bought a memory foam pillow to help with mine - didn't work, just seemed to go solid (maybe you need an oversized pillow case so it can spread out). got some new pillows, one orthopaedic and topped that with a duck and down - really comfortable.

Depends on which silentnight you bought slugger, i deliver furniture and there are loads of things that make a mattress. Generally speaking the heavier it is the better it will be due to springs etc. i've got a memory foam one and hate it but the wife loves it. If going for a topper make sure it's at least 2 inch thick but I prefer a thick heavy sprung traditional matt if I got away with it.

I have a memory foam mattress and love it but I like firm mattresses anyway so it you like them softer, Memory foam may not be the way to go.

I always thought that a firmer mattress was good for your back I remmeber my grandad used to put a door under his side of the bed usd to get some strange questions when him and my nan stayed in a hotel.

We replaced our old soft saggy matress with a nice new firm one, It's taken us two years to get used to it. Firm matresses may be good for your posture but they are as uncomfortable as hell.

Do memory foam toppers work ?

Yes and no.

I just wrote the most boring reply EVER, and my computer swallowed it before I could actually post it.

So I'll go for the short ( -er ) version.

Mattresses cost from £100 to a couple of grand. You get what you pay for.

Silent Night are decent, but a long way from the top top quality.

If you suffer with back / neck injuries you may want to consider investing in a whole new mattress is budget allows. In the long run it may be worth it.

But you'll need to think about spending £500 - £1500.

If you invest £1000 on a mattress it'll last you 10-12 years if you look after it. IE for two people sleeping on it that's about £1 per week per person. So it's a lot of cash, but the comfort/support will last.

If budget is tighter then a topper is the next best bet. But again, you get what you pay for. Kaymed toppers have a breathable membrane ( sp??) so you don't get as hot. The cheaper ones are just a lump of foam, so they tend to get sweaty. But if you get one thick enough, it will soften your existing mattress.

I can ramble for hours about modern technology and mattresses, but suffice to say that the old board under a bed trick is like using hickory shafts in today's world.

Visco foam looks to be supportive, but softer, so it shapes to your spine, and supports you along your torso, not just at the hips and shoulders.

Try to go to a good old fashioned bed shop and try manufacturers like KAYMED or TEMPUR before you decide what to buy. They are a lot more expensive than many, but they are still a lot cheaper than some brands out there. If you find them comfortable they will pay for themselves in the long run.

If you go down the topper route consider this :

A cheap topper looks like this - it'll let you shape to it, but there's no air movement around it, so it will get very hot.

A mid quality topper like this will allow for more air movement, so it will generally be more comfortable for most people.

If you want a new mattress complete then something like this might be worth a try but these guys like to earn a few bob, so you should be able to get it cheaper elsewhere.

But if you can stretch the budget then these are really rather nice I prefer the stockholm to the torino, but it's all down to personal taste.

And remember - this is the short version of what I wrote before

We brought a matress with a built in memory foam top (about the top 2 inches or so). Another good tip is that we brought 2 3ft singles and put them together. We also each have a single quilt so neither of us disturbs the other if we turn over or get up in the night. Sleep better now than ever and wake without any aches and pains. Still easily accessable for other nocturnal activities though. ;)

Don't like memory foam pillows though, they always seem to settle in the wrong place and make my head sweat too much.

I got a memory foam mattress from here http://www.ergoflex.co.uk/

It's the best mattress I have had bar none. I have had it for nearly 3 years and don't think I would ever go back to a traditional sprung mattress.

Luckily for me I managed to get one during a rather generous sale, but would still pay the current price.

I'd have thought that most problems come from a mattress that is too SOFT as it won't support you properly?

I know that when I fall asleep on my nice squishy sofa in front of the tele I wake up almost folded in half and unable to stand up properly :(

I'd start with a decent pillow that offers the right support for your neck.... or go speak to a guy in the bed shop and see what they say.
