I have my first ever matchplay game on Wednesday evening against a 7 handicapper. I am off 23. Its full handicap, so do I get shots on all holes except SI 17 and 18?

Keep your ball in play as much as possible. Dont take the driver just because you think you should. Play the percentages.
Me and the driver separated a while ago. Don't like to talk about it....

Your are correct.

Remember play your own game--its likely he will outdrive you on every hole, dont try and match him for distance, keep your tempo and rythm.

Good luck.

The advantage of being shorter off the tee is that you'll be playing first. On the shorter par 4's if you can get it onto the middle of the green you won't be to far from any flag and it'll force him to start shooting for the pins more especially if you are there in one less with your shot.

On the longer par 4's play them as 3 shotters and use the shots you have and the same on the 5's. If you don't think you can get there in three just lay up somewhere you can get on relatively close in 4 and hope to make a putt.

If you do hit a poor shot, don't panic and try and play miracle shots to recover. Use your shots to get the ball in play. Just play your own game and try and enjoy playing with a good quality golfer and see what you can pick up in terms of timing, tempo and course management

Make the most of the shots you have dont feel you have to do something special . Play your game.

do you need to play differently in matchplay doubles?

I know that you can choose who plays first off the tee but is there anything else you need to do (other than keep in on the short stuff)

Well, I played the match last night in rain followed by sun, played quite well and was up a hole twice in the game but lost 2 & 1.
What won him the game though was his superior putting. With an extra shot on all but two holes I could match him to the green, then he would sink huge putts and 2-putt from anywhere. Really opened my eyes to the importance of putting, am gonna focus on improving mine

Its something I've been working very hard on in the last few months and I've seen a huge difference in holing out from 3-6 feet. I'm making a lot of these now and add in a few drained long putts from 10-20 feet and it makes a real difference to a score
