Matchplay etiquitte

Reading the previous post regarding finding an opponents lost ball in matchplay, what do others do when this situation arises and what would you say is the correct etiquitte? Do you search for an opponents lost ball regardless of the score in the game or just when you feel it might be more of an advantage to find it or, do you leave the ball finding to your opponent and secretly hope that it is lost?

My thoughts exactly although i have played against plenty who don`t in matchplay or walk over for 30 secs have a glance around and then leave me to it. Just wondered what other peoples thoughts are.

If my opponent hits it into the thick stuff I usually ask do they want some help finding it. Obviously if they say yes and we do find it, I may get an advantage if it is in a horrid lie. If he says no I tend to go towards my ball and keep a wary eye out for any shenanigans (we know there are some out there) and then carry on if he finds it. If its me who has lost it I'll weigh up my option. Thick trees and bushes I'll look for it on my own (if they offer) but thick or medium rough I'd hope they help as there is more chance of getting some form of club on it

I always have a look. Give me the right strop if people don't help out. It's only a game.

Always go to help look irrespective of the state of the match, if they say they don't want help I wouldn't expect them to be looking either!

The one I find hard is when to mention time. Played a match recently and we must have been nearer 10 than 5 minutes before we found my opponents ball.

How do you deal with this?

If you've both been looking for 3 or 4 minutes what do you say?
"I'm starting the clock now on two minutes"?
"I'm starting the clock now and will run for 5 minutes"?

What do you people do?

In my case I have an old digital watch that i've got tie-wrapped to my bag. When I reach my starting point for looking for the ball I have a glance at the time and take the 5 mins from there. I can do exactly the same when looking for my opponents ball.

Strange one Homer

I've never been asked if I want help and certainly never asked anyone if they want help. It's just one of those unwritten rules that you will help other players, even an opponent, to find their ball.

I'd always go across to help, - if nothing else, it might just stop anyone you dont usually play with from 'miraculously' finding a ball in a nice little clearing, all clubs have them.
