Marking your ball

Green and blue ink weigh the same Rob but green is more aerodynamic

Do you mark your balls as you buy them or on the course just before use?

I mark mine all at the same time at home when they are delivered. I then sort them so I don't have 2 of the same number in the same sleeve so I always have a different numbered ball available when playing a provisional.

Anyone else do this or am I just OCD about this?

I seperate mine and always try to play with a number 1 , with a number 2 in my left hand pocket as a "frightener".

at the moment i just leave what the original owners put on it, but if its a new ball for a comp, i draw a black line around the ball joining up the Prov 1 arrow. then dots around number on one side.

For new balls i'll let my kids draw on them with sharpies.
For found balls i'm more than happy to go with whatever has already been put on the ball, saves me the bother.

When I open a new sleeve of 3 balls I mark them with dots adjacent to the number - 1 on the first, 2 on the second and 3 on the third. Then they're already marked up as provisionals too!

Two dots on the ball, one either side of the number. And a line all the way round the ball for lining up for putting. All done with a sharpie, either black, red or blue depends which colour comes out of the bag first.

But do you think it inconsiderate to mark a ball with a permanent marker that cannot be cleaned off easily, for when your ball is lost, and found by someone else who wishes to use it?

I only ask because someone was moaning how inconsiderate it was to use a hard to remove marker on balls they had lost and he had found.

I use a red permanent marker and draw a smiley face on each and every one of my balls. So far I have had 4 returned to me:)

Who was moaning?

i mark with a red dot top right of the number

I draw a ring around the maker's name and number on both sides of the ball, and a line either side of the alignment mark, all using an indelible black sharpie. :)

Golf in the UK is far easier than Thailand. In Thailand there are that many hazzards, water, OB, coconuts, monkeys, snakes, jungle that you can on a bad day lose several balls, in the UK i only use Pro V1s I've bought brand new, now in Thailand ive decided I'm only using second hand balls. Thats why this subject originally came up. i tried getting the permanent ink off which worked in most cases but some bozos covered the balls in all sorts of marks. Anyway that will give you something to bang on about..
