Market leader and why...

This is one of the most interesting thread on here in a long while BTW

Well said that man, nice to have a decent debate instead of some of the crap that's been posted recently

Without adding to the whats the best debate can i just add that not every player plays with what brand pay the most money. Most Ping players would make way more by switching but Ping players tend to remain with Ping, likewise Titleist hence why there comes a time when big names eventually leave.

Putters tend to be very individual and most (not all) go with what work, Nike players tend to be contracted to Nike but most other brand ambassadors play with what works. Luke Donald - Odyssey, Poulter has switched around a few times from Scottys to Odyssey to which ever takes his eye. Im not saying the likes of Donald isn't paid by Odyssey now (and TM for woods) but I believe he wasn't originally.

Westwood has been offered multiple higher priced contracts over the years but has stuck with Ping

Think someone on Twitter was saying that both TM and Callaway were after Watson but he stayed with Ping

Using Tiger at 25 was a bad comparison! 2000 he was in the form of his life, and is highly unlikely to have a better season, whereas Rory had his best season so far at 24/25

What is intriguing me is that I often hear people say that they don't play a particular brand because x player uses it. But then throughout this thread are examples of people being influenced by the fact that certain brands are popular on tour.

Someone earlier said marketing, marketing, marketing. Is this a time for a confessional on the real reasons we buy the equipment we do...?

I'd say marketing has a huge bearing on what people buy, or at the very least try out.

That's why the big mainstream brands pump so much money into advertising, promoting, marketing.....call it what you want.
Along with tour sponsorship, of course.

Most will be influenced by this
Or brand loyalty
Or budget

It does always make me laugh when I see a club golfer with a full bag of 1 manufacturers clubs.
I'd find it very hard to believe, if fitted, there wasn't atleast 1 other brand, in 1 dept of the bag set up, that wasn't better than the full bag 1 brand set up

Think there are definatly cases where people buy certain equipment based on what a player uses

Woods is a perfect example - some Woods fans will buy only Nike and vice versa some people won't touch Nike because of Woods

Know a guy at our place who is a massive Poulter fan and kitted himself out with everything Cobra

I used to have a mix bag of clubs but over time have just liked TM and the clubs they have - none of my fav players use TM

I have a Woods problem. When you're called Tiger and you're poor at golf being kitted out head to toe in Nike is not a good move - so I can't buy any of their stuff ;)

Does the guy who likes Poulter turn up resplendent in IJP tartans wearing a visor?

I don't think he does wear the clothing - he doesn't have the "shape" for it :D

IJP do some very good stuff now - most of my clothes are IJP

My first set of clubs were Nikes but wouldn't touch them now - not a fan of their looks

Is there many non Nike staff with mike clubs in the bag. Might be but I can't think of too many off the bat.

I don't know of many but there are a few fairway woods knocking about.
I know for sure that GMac was playing a vr pro ltd edition FW as recently as last year, can't remember if it was the 3 or the 5, I think 5.
Louis Oosthuizen had an old nike Sq tour 5w in the bag for years, whilst contracted to Ping. Not sure if he still does.
The guys on the tour truck from ping told us at the putter fitting that their contracts are 11 clubs and you must use the driver and putter. So you might see a few wedges or fairways from other manufacturers in a ping player's bag, but you'll never see a different driver or putter.
Other manufacturers contracts differ obviously.

So is that a statement from Ping that they see themselves as being specialists in the putter and driver market. Would be interested to know what the deal is with other manufacturers

A lot of the manufacturers do mix deals but seems Nike mainly do full Nike only for most of their staff players - Callaway might be the same but not sure

Very surprised how many are saying titleist for market leader in FW woods. The new 915s are ace but going back over recent years I see way more TM or Callaway fairways in people's bags, RBZ and xhot smashed it in the fairway market in recent years.

I don't think I've ever heard someone say they won't play certain clubs because a tour player plays them.

Many other reasons but not that.
