No one would say that winning the FA Cup was a bigger achievement than winning the league but in golf it's the opposite. No one (except Monty ;)) cares all that much about who wins the Money List/Order of Merit/Race to Dubai or whatever you want to call it, but winning a major is seen as the ultimate achievement. As Ricky Barnes/Zach Johnston/Paul Lawrie and many others have proved though, you don't have to be a particularly good (in relative terms) player to win one - anyone can do it if they have a few good days and maybe the odd stroke of luck. All the old guff about how you have to 'lose a major before you can win one', or 'learn how to deal with the pressure before you can come through and win' seems to be nonsense.

Anyway it seems unfair to me that a consistently good player like Monty (love him or hate him) is viewed as a lesser golfer than any of the above just because he doesn't have his name on one of those four trophies.

Just saying is all...

Trouble is you can win the OOM/RTD without having won anything. Come 2nd every week and you'll win the "league" (unless someone else wins every week!).
To win a major you've (obviously) got to win it.

Where's the real kudos in winning the Madeira Open/Portuguese Open/Swiss Open and winning a league that counts the money you've won? Win THE OPEN and you're made for life.

Yes that's true...but who's the better golfer? The guy who wins a major once and does nothing else, or the guy who finishes second every week?

Again, no argument there re. kudos and of course any pro would rather win the Open than a host of minor titles, but gaining lots of kudos doesn't necessarily make them a "better" golfer than the guy who consistently finishes in the top ten week in, week out.
