I just had a lesson and the pro said I was too tense within my swing. So he told me to take a deep breath and blow out (loudly) throughout my back swing and my follow through.

And WOW, it actually works and I was able to hit some very good shots.

Has anyone else had to do this?

Everything works when you're stood by the pro. He could tell you to fart on your downswing and it would work initially. Probably won't work next time when he's not there..

I had a lesson today and the club pro told me the same thing, he also slightly changed my swing.

I played 18 holes this afternoon and thought that the changes made would really affect me on the course as I wasn't with the pro constantly adjusting the swing.

When you consciously focus on the change it will just become a part of the routine. My score improved from my last round, there was the odd duff but that was expected.

I find the lesson and help from the pro are really valuable, especially if you are willing to put in the practice.

Make sure you keep your follow through under control

like it :D

I farted on the downswing last year with a 3 iron in my hand, came down 3 inches behind the ball and promptly fell on my arse because i was standing in a loose divot. I kid you not.

I was playing on my own and i heard HOWLING laughter behind me. 2 juniors happened to be teeing off from the 16th tee, 10 yards behind me. One of them was rolling about on the ground.

I had to pick my ball up and hurry off to the next tee, ashamed.

Wow possibly the most pessimistic reply ever. So you are saying that no one can learn anything from a pro as it won't work when they are not around?

OP if it works go for it, it's not magic just a great technique to relax your muscles and swing with ease and rhythm.

You're a barrel of laughs aren't ya!
Blowing out loudly during the swing is one of the daftest things i've ever heard, then again golf does have these little quirks. Each to their own though as I like to say.

Don't forget to smile G_Mulligan...preferably during the swing...might improve your game..

Fair enough if you are just joking but it does read very cynical. The guy is really happy with a new technique that is working for him and you are pishing on his cabbage patch.

It is not so daft really, archers release on an exhale, power lifters exhale as they lift. If you are holding your breath during the swing it will create tension. Ever see David Beckham or Jonny Wilkinson hold there breath before a kick? No way, it is big breath in exhale and kick, they have it as part of their routine.

Also for the record I do smile but only during my putting set up & stroke as it makes me happy and confident that I am going to hole it :)
