Just a quickie thrown in here do ye guys in clubs regulary see big scores esp stableford points been brought in . im talking 45/46 points most weeks , (thats why i love strokes)doesnt over bother me coz i play golf for ME not prizes, but i often wonder how so many people can play so much better than their handicap .. 38/39 ok thats 2 or 3 better even 40 is good golf anything after that i think there is a h/cap issue here, youd think after a while with handicap reductions etc it would sort itself out, but when you see long time members shooting scores like this ,that puzzels me a bit.. be good to hear the wider opinion on this ??

Bladeplayer i dont think 42/43 is too high, our weekend comps are always won with these types of scores. There is always going to be someone who has a great day where it all works.I play with a guy whos just gone up to 17hp,but imo hes a 12/13 hp the trouble is he always messes up somewhere, however one day it will all come together and he will score 45/46.Is he a bandit, far from it,he just cant handle pressure.

Most of the time the course is set up easy, and with no SS to speak of there is no way of telling how hard it was (or easy). The only proof of handicap is back tees, medal pin positions, strokeplay, and name in the book. Someone who shoots 45 points in a swindle has done nothing wrong in my view. You would probably need 39 points just to buffer.

I remember seeing results in the local paper from the Nairn Dunbar Winter league a few years ago.
56 points from a 16 handicapper, it just stuck in my memory for some reason :D

Don't think so, 2nd was not far behind. It was the seniors winter league or something like that and I would imagine on a much, much shorter course.

its was a couple of years ago, but it just stuck in the Memory ;)

I don't find it that long when i've played it. Four par 5's and only Long Peter i struggled with last time i played in a comp. It was into the wind and the fairway was drentched. Hit drive, 3 wood and 2 iron and was still short. Normaly make buffer of one or two under the css. Always plenty of scoring hole though.

It's not long, Patrick, at 6700 yards. Just find it harder to play these days for some reason.

Best score as a youth was 74 and won the high and low handicap four day Opens in consecutive years in my 20s. But haven't broken 79 round it in a few years now, albeit I play it maybe once a year at most. Lost balls in the gorse always kill me. Playing again in June though so here's hoping.

No offence to Nairn and Tain or even Dornoch but I usually score about 6 shots better round them than I do at the Dunbar.

Could not comment on Nairn yet as I have not played a medal round on there yet. Nairn Dunbar never shot over my handicap! :p

Royal Dornoch is my bogey course, never played to my handicap in about 20 attempts. The Struie on the other hand I've shot a 74 gross on a windy day in a club match for Tain. All the Dornoch members a know say the Struie is harder than the championship course, but not for me!

I've been a member at Tain for 5 years now and only last year did I play to or even under my handicap. I won two monthly Medals there last year and went from 12 to 8.4. Hope to get lower this year as I don't plan to play the same amount of away opens again this year, so that should cut out the whole two strokes of point ones I had last year from doing this.
