Just returned from a weekend away with the lads and stayed and played at Macdoonalds Portal and thought I'd review it.
Played the Championship course on Friday and Saturday with a mixed group of handicappers. Think everyone has an opinion on hotel courses but I have to say that this is one of the best course I've played on especially attached to a hotel.
For a par 73 course it didn't feel too long even though there's only 4 holes under 300 yards. The course is very forgiving and for the high handicap players we wasn't hacking away behind trees all day and the rough wasn't too long and easy enough to play out of.
The greens were fantastic, reasonably fast and made you think about your putt as they had movement in them. The fairways were in excellent condition and the bunkers were challenging but playable and every bunker had a rake.
The 1st hole is a great hole to set off on and sets you up for the rest of the course. The longest hole on the course is the 3rd which is a great hole, doesn't play too long as your playing downhill and for long hitters can easily be a birdie hole or par, the 4th is slightly shorter but plays up hill and feels longer. From the 6th to the 13th its all par 4's and 5's and a good opportunity to pick up a few shots on 350+ yarders.
The favourite hole for everyone was the 14th. A testing 125 yarder over water. Fantastic hole which had the scratch player to the 28 handicappers worried about which club to use - some made it, some didn't!!
All in all we all really enjoyed the course, there's a halfway house for drinks, bins and decent signage on every hole and is obviously very well looked after.
We went as part of a deal for the weekend which included a fantastic meal on friday night so not sure how much a round is but we paid £200 for 2 nights B&B, inc the meal and 2 rounds on this course and 9 holes on the small Adherne course. Really good deal for a brilliant course and very nice hotel.
