:rant:having not booked a tee time for to-days comp because i thought my wife was off work and we were going to MANCHESTER she had to cancel and go in to cover, imagine my delight when i phoned the club to see if there were any places left to be told they could fit me in at 9-55 great i thought after my bum spanking the other night i was up to making good, imagine my crashing down to earth feeling as i met my playing partners, one was a super senior in his late 70's and the other decked out in the latest gear and the shiniest shinies in the world complete with a stewart trolley and bag, after we shook hands the i have everything then confessed to only just joining the club and i was to mark his card for his h/cap as he had never played before and this was his first time ON GRASS!!!!!only ever hit a few balls when he bought his clubs from the shop,no wonder the other lads were smirking as i walked to the tee,138 strokes later we finally finished,we let 4 groups through and i cant count how many times i had to apologize to fellow players and if looks could kill,i hate newby's with more money than sense aaaaaaggggggghhhhhhhh!!.

NO but i didn't learn with thousands of pounds worth of equipment at a private club IN A COMP.

My god thats some chip on your shoulder 6". :fore:

So what if he has thousands of pounds worth of equipment. :ears:

He's probably to scared to play on Council Courses where you live, in case he gets mugged.

So....it would have been less infuriating if he's been using a set of clubs from the 1800's? If he has the money to burn then who cares?

Would possibly agree that someone shooting high shouldn't be playing competitively but if the club allows it how is that his problem? It's totally his choice if he wants to make a tit out of himself!

What exactly did you "apologise" for? As long as he observed the rules and basic ettiquete......what did he do wrong?

If someone apologised on my behalf I'd be less than enthused

Every single person that pays their subs has the right to play in any club comps. Its that simple.
All of the above just comes across as Cat 1 elitism. If the guy wants to get his HC to get better then good on him, maybe you should notify your club that you only want to be drawn with fully competent players under the age of 50 and HC of less than 10. Especially if you are booking at the last minute.

Surely it was still better than a day traipsing around the trafford centre with credit card at the ready. :)

I don't think the fact the guy had all the gear has any bearing (unless you fancied his Stewart trolley? :)..)
It's always a gamble fitting in but we all have to start somewhere.

Golf snob with a huge chip. He's paid his money same as you to join. So what if he has all the gera but hasn't played. Providing he hasn't broekn any rules by going out in a comp to put a card in and clearly not if the pro shop sent him out. You've let other groups through so you did your bit. I bet the senior had his fair share of bad shots too but no mention of him. Poor post I'm afraid

so i should have to babysit a complete novice who had no idea about etiquette or the rules of golf, who had no idea about how to play golf let alone swing a club, the point about his gear is immaterial he should learn to play, learn the rules and learn the etiquette, why should my day be ruined,i should have let him break the rules and dq'd him as it was i had to keep telling him what to do contrary to the rules and over 5 hours of being asked about grip, swing ,ball position and 6 putting just got me down.

I kind of know where you are coming from.

Would it have been better if he'd had old clubs in an old bag and gone round in 139 though?

:)

First time on grass is probably not the best time to play a comp.

I'm surprised that you are expected to mark a non competitor's card for hcp during a comp.
As a past Captain, I have happily marked loads of newbies cards, but not at the same time as I am trying to play competitively.
When marking a newbie card, I like to give 100% attention to their game and ensure they understand about the basic rules.

he was told in the pro shop last week that they would put him with a couple of elderly chaps who would SHOW HIM THE ROPES one dropped out i like a mug got his space, the chap doesn't know anyone at the club so the pro is going to fix him a few games!!!!!!! not with me he isn't.

You need to hope he never beats you in the future now LOL ;-)

I have seen a lot of all the gear - No idea posts on here in the past but they ain't on your side today buddy ha ha

to be honest i couldn't care less what gear he had it was just they way i was stuck with him,i see not many coming forward to say they would have played with him!!!!

Well, I think the point about the gear is neither here nor there. I have no problem with anyone spending their money on whatever they want.

However, I agree with you; this guy should have at the very least had a few bounce games to learn the fundamentals before going out in a medal. To play your first round in a medal with guys you don't even know is very inconsiderate; but the PRO should have told him that rather than just putting him in there - the guy himself probably doesn't know any better.

Maybe he's thinking the same thing?
Or about to post his expieriences of his first round... :)

like i said the pro put him in the comp to help him meet people!!!!! i don't wish to sound bad but to be honest i DONT wish to teach a complete stranger how to play golf or spend my golfing time explaining every nuance i have been taught or learnt from playing golf for years.
