I played in my first ever medal last week after being coerced by my pp.

At the 10th I hit my best drive of the day and saw it all the way. It appeared to just run just off the edge of the fairway.

Any doubt about finding it and I'd have played a provisional

When I got to where I thought it should be I just couldn't find it.
It really wasn't practical to walk all the way back to the tee to play it again as the next group had started to tee off.

No alternative I guess in this situation than to card an NR

If you dont go back and hit another then yes your card will be NR for the comp. You can however carry on and have the card count towards your handicap.

Ah, I didn't know that. So effectively, for handicapping purposes, you would just mark that particular hole as NR then?

yes. your handicap adjustment is worked out using stableford points. so if you don't complete the hole it's the same as a blob in a stableford comp.
