Lorry drivers:- hello? Any with common sense?

Lorry drivers in this weather WTF????

They come to a steep hill with not a hope in hell of making it up, what do they do, they think, ach I'll try it anyway even although my eighteen tonne truck only has one drive axle and the other five just turn.

They get about a quarter of the way up and slither all the way back down or jack knife on the way back down blocking the whole dam road.

It gets better though!

Lorry number two behind witnesses lorry number one failing and thinks, ach, I'll give it a go as well, he proceeds to drive round stuck lorry number one on the other side of the road and again fails miserably resulting in him rolling back to either jack knife or block both sides of the road. WTF! AAAAHHHHHHGGGG!

Why cant they use common sense and pull in to the side of the road and allow cars to pass etc until such time a gritter comes along and grits the bloody hill????????

Lorry drivers caused 90% of the problems in my area yesterday and probably the rest of the country with their inconsiderate actions and quite frankly selfish attitude. With their grinding the snow into black ice wheel spinning and failing quite miserably in their attempts they caused mayhem all round the country.

Rant is not over yet.

Not completely justifying their actions, and I can't say from experience as I have never driven a lorry.

However I think your decision making might be skewed if you only had a certain amount of time you were able to drive, before you had an enforced rest, and in the case of private haulage companies, if you weren't going to get paid if you didn't complete your deliveries

Why can't everyone else use common sense at stay at home, then it won't matter if a lorry gets stuck?

I would also like to bet that if the lorry drivers hadn't bothered trying, everyone would be moaning about the lack of deliveries instead e.g empty supermarkets, petrol stations etc...

Whatever they did it would be lose-lose.

No they wouldn't. As I said all they had to do was apply a common sense approach. Lorries only have one axle which delivers the power. Common sense tells them that a steep hill, not gritted or cleared of snow is a big no no.

Therefore pull over and wait for the snow plough or gritter. Once the gritter goes through then continue with the journey. Simple.

Not block the road for everyone resulting in no emergency services or gritters getting through and causing miles and miles of grid lock, misery and frustration for every other road user.

Yes, but its easy to say that when you're not the one losing money every moment you are not moving.

I'd also be willing to bet, at least as much, if not more chaos was caused by idiots in cars. However it seems you have experienced an issue with lorries.

AWD for the win, I havent met a hill I cant get up yet.

Oh Yes! I love it when i cruise up the outside of all the mere mortals slipping and sliding trying to get up a frozen slope. :)

My £4k Range Rover has more than paid for itself by getting my wife and myself (both self employed) to work over the last couple of winters.

I'd be very surprised if lorry drivers were doing what the craw is sayin. ALll lorries are fitted with diff locking axels, so I cant see there being a problem on a hill.
Maybe the craw was in the wrong here..............

Loads of lorries struggled down here.

We had loads of calls but we refused to take our 7-tonne Isuzu breakdown vehicle out as the rear-wheels are lively in the wet so in snow/ice they would be awful. Reason being that there is no weight on the rear-end when unladen.

I didnt see the point in chancing it and risking causing gridlock for everyone by parking it sideways on a hill and getting stuck.

Agree Craw. . . . . .I drove up to the North East last week for work and the traffic was only using one lane of the A19 as the 2nd lane was covered in snow. Even though it was busy, the traffic was moving ok. I could not believe what happened . . . . . .2 lorry's leathered it past all the cars covering them and their windscreens in snow and brown mush. 3 miles and 2 hours later up the road.....one of them had made mincemeat of a blue van.

Some 4x4 drivers do amuse me, looking all smug when they get more traction than everyone else, and then looking less smug as they realise they have 2 wheel steering and 4 wheel braking just the same as everyone else!

4x4's are ok when fitted with off road tyres but all the knobs round here are running BMW, Audi and Ranges with low profile tyres so they think they are invincible but are still getting stuck. I walked past an old bint in a new Merc stuck on a hill expecting all the men stuck behind her to push her out of trouble.

I remember a few years ago, a lass in the bank asked what it was like on the roads.
Snow not too bad but fog a bitch.

I've got a 4x4 she says, i'll be ok

Oh, they're good in fog are they? I reply ???????? WTF
