Long Irons / Driving Irons

Oh for sure. Its not my intent to be pushing it as such anyhow, its just an interesting and fun club that I am enjoying. Maybe just cos its new and I am hitting it well this month :D

Keep enjoying and ultimately there's no reason why you should not have continued success. There's many ways to get the job done in this game ;)

I've tried a few different ones and wasn't that sure.

Tried the Titleist TMB recently and it's a ridiculous club. I've got the 3 iron and already thinking about the 2, 4 & 5 (if you can get a 5 in the uk) and then building my set around them. Look like a blade (ish) but perform like a super GI iron.

I've previously had the Mizuno and Tm udi but hated the big chunky sole/looks.

Titleist have absolutely nailed it with them.

Think I'm going to have to post some pics of what a real 1&2 irons really look like for you boys, instead of today's incarnation.........

Glad you like the TMB 👍

I will be getting the 3 and 4

It's all about consistency and what you can and can't do.

I can flush a 2 iron - maybe 2 times out of 10.
A 3 iron? Maybe 4/10 - but my 22° hybrid? 7-8/10
I could practice hard so I could hit a 3 iron 7-8/10 but why, when I have a club that does the job..?
It gives me what I want.
I'll stick with a hybrid and fairways Ta....

Long Irons / Driving Irons... For better players right?! Hybrids for the lesser players, easier to hit right?!

Neither of which is true though. Better players use hybrids, and many higher handicappers prefer long irons. Doesn't make a blind bit of difference whether your lesser or better. I know for a fact there is no way I can hit a long iron (or driving iron) better than my hybrid .... that doesn't mean this won't change as they become easier to play, but I go for percentages and at the moment it's hybird for me.

I tried the titleist tmb iron in a net at American golf. Looked great but without seeing the flight it was pretty pointless.

Tired the 2 and 4. Don't think I was flushing the 2 tbh.

Sorry, I thought you were comparing long irons with hybrids

Ye, I would like to back pedal a bit here please. I had thought I had pointed this post down the new hollow larger headed driving iron thing but I just re-read the op and I don't really.

I think the hybrid v long iron iron replacement conversation is perhaps an easier sell that the out right long iron v hybrid.

I use both - as I'm surrounded by a few links as well as parkland I generally have some tools depending on what I want to do - 18º & 21º Callaway Apex UT for the links, and hybrids for those lovely high quick stops into long par 3 etc for the less windy days.

Hybrids have a use, as do long irons, and saying, 'better players use this and lesser use that' is a statement that should be back up with an elbow to the temple.

Hybrids for me pal. Long irons just come out too flat for me. I start at 5 iron which is no problem to get elevated. But after that there wasn't a huge gap in distance when hitting a 4 iron so I dropped it and stick in 2 ping G25 hybrids. Stupid easy to hit. I can hit them into orbit or send them out low. And the best thing is even when you don't hit them out of the middle they still go.
I think the better player / weaker player tagging of long irons/ hybrids is pretty inaccurate. Use what works for your swing. Not what you think certain players off certain handicaps should be using.

Great that your getting on with those driving irons though Al. I'd love to be able to hit them. But never got on with them off the ground...

I still regret giving mine away to a friend, I owed him one and he wanted the club.

Saved me paying him back for a favour and I preferred my hybrid or 3 iron over it at the time.

I never saw it coming back until a year later when I realised I could find a use for it as an alternative when the course was running and I struggled with my 3 iron.

My opinions on hybrids are well documented on here. IN fact Brendy and I share similar views.

I'm considering something in the 18° bracket but will have to demo alongside my 5 wood to see if it's actually worth it.

I've never liked hybrids, ever.

Amen Bruv.
I bought this a little while ago and I have to say it is fantastic, very very forgiving. 17 years old and goes like a bullet.
Ive used it for two 18's and a 9 holer and it has already ousted my 3wd.

Had a nudge with an 180° variant but prefer the flight and softer landing 5 wood.

I'm wondering whether I can live with the difference between my wood and 4 iron or just buy a 21° iron/hybrid iron.
