Now before i start i dont want this to end up being a Michael measuring contest.....

I consistently carry my 5 iron off a tee 160 mtrs with a comfortable swing. I think thats about 176 yards.....I know this as its the club i always take off our 2nd par 3 at 158mtrs....

Our 4th is also a par 3 at 168 mtrs off the whites and i hit my 4 iron...But what im interested in is ....I have trouble gauging how far i hit my 4 and 5 iron off the ground....

What would be a reasonable distance for a fairway hit with my long irons taking into account my tee shots.......How much distance should i loose...

The reason i ask is that i had 154 left to hit the middle of our 18th green today and i hit 4 iron...It went dead straight but i was just short of the green....Granted i held back a little for fear of cutting the ball slightly and it was into a good breeze.

I don't see why it wouldn't go as far as off a tee.

The tee just gives you a better chance of making good contact.
If a 4 iron normally goes 168m and you hit one less than 154m then I'd say it was a bit thin.

I think maybe ever so slightly Region.....I didnt feel it through the club shaft but i barely grazed the ground with the club... which was pretty bare.

As Region3 says, with decent off the ground contact you shouldn't be looking at any extreme difference.
I'm consistently 165-170y with my 5 iron off the ground at the practice area and use my 5 iron on our 166y 7th with same distance (within manageable tolerance) achieved.
Granted there are times where I don't get a clean contact and I'm shorter than that but on the whole it's pretty much the same.

4 iron easy swing for me is 175-180 yards. If I try to give it anymore it ends up going right. Used it off the tee the other day to great effect.
