Local Elections on Thursday 4th May

In this election, even if there was a candidate I liked three others will also be elected. It just doesn't seem very democratic. I'm torn because the party closest to me on the local issue that most concerns me is the tories but on other issues and at national level they are completely unpalatable.

Add in logistical issues for getting to the polling station and it just doesn't seem worth the trouble. But I've got my poll card so I'll play it by ear after work.

The deputy leader of the Tories at Holyrood has been rejected by Scots voters 7 times.
His party's political list vote has enabled him to become an MSP and earn over £1m in the last 10 years. Now that is not fair.

That's the list system for you. It works that way for all parties. How else would Neil Hamilton get elected in Wales? No system is perfect, you need to choose the least worst option.

In the end I voted LibDem. Hopefully if there is a large enough LibDem vote in these locals the electorate will be encouraged to vote LibDem in the GE - and give Jeremy Hunt a worrying election night.

It's not a perfect system but far better than Westminster which sees the snp with nearly all the MPs but only half the votes.

It says on my voting card it's only an Election of Mayor vote, I've heard nothing about it being anything else?

Are UKIP expected to make major gains in England and Wales ?

Seems the kippers are mostly migrating to the Tories from the early results. Which make sense as the parties are becoming increasingly indistinguishable nowadays in most policy areas. Tories were scared the more right wing were deserting them for UKIP, so they held a Brexit referendum, won it and now they are getting the kipper vote back. They removed us from the biggest trade block in the world, rip the country and union apart but will gain a few more seats in parliament. Well played.;)

It does sound like sour grapes but your summary is about right. Expect the GE to follow the same pattern. UKIP finished but raison d'etre met.

I probably won't bother

For the first time in my adult life i didn't bother to vote.

and also the first time i didn't have a clue who to vote for. all candidates are an absolute shower, all driven by self interest and lust for power and greed.

luckily for all the candidates, none chose to come to my door and canvas, or they would have been put though there paces.

I also suspect this will mean the end for Corbyn the way it is going. If not now then definitely after the 8th June.

Also interesting to see the tories have gone into 'humble' mode a bit, desperately trying to be seen as appearing cocky or arrogant in any interviews. It must be a hard sell for some of them but I imagine that is the party strategy, don't appear cocky ahead of the GE as it may backfire.

Looks like there is one or two pigs with rosettes looking for alternative employment this morning. As the Tash predicted.
I will also predict this. By the end of the day a certain Mr Corbyn will be twitching more than a snake with piles.

In Scotland from 4 councils results returned, I'm not sure about vote share or turnouts and ignoring independents who are miles ahead in seats, but of the main parties already Cons well up and Labour well down, SNP up a little. Not sure if people voted on the individuals record/personality, their Indyref position or their Brexit position (maybe all three) of their would be councillors. Early days but at seat level only Cons and SNP looking like political winners, Labour the losers and Lib Dems irrelevant. I thought LibDems might resurge but not so far.

edit: after 6 councils returned only Tories looking like winners (compared to 2012) now. Corbyn effect looking pretty negative.

Just what are the Labour party activists thinking now?? LOL

I think the local MP's not allied to Corbyn will be working like stink to emphasise their local credentials. They will not want him, his shadow cabinet colleagues or battle bus anywhere near their constituencies. The Corbyn activists will blindly carry on. It's all a conspiracy by the media and Blairites and that is what is stopping them from winning in their eyes.

Wonder where that will leave the Tories with SNP and Labour come Election Day?
